See to me that many sounds has the exact opposite effect ( but I have no problem counting or rather feeling the exact passing of time) and I find myself unable to think clearly. I know from talking to others that I am not the only one.
I am not an afker, I know how points are counted and I like coordination and some call outs, find the use of some sounds useful but those macros marking the passing of each second are extremely distracting and irritating to some people and they are often combined with many other sound macros of varied importance.
I think that the compromise You mention makes sense and is reasonable. I believe that something like this would achieve the same thing and be a lot less annoying:
/a Get Burst Ready in 5 <se.8><wait.1>
/a 5 <wait.1>
/a 4 <wait.1>
/a 3 <wait.1>
/a 2 <wait.1>
/a 1 <wait.1>
/a Push <se.7>
You still see the passing seconds if you need them and the sounds are used for the most significant parts. It a balance thing.
Still frontlines is frontlines, there will always be people running like chickens with their heads cut off, sound or no sound.
