I don't think there is anything wrong with 50s joining in lower level behests. I do it for achievements. I don't have any DoW or DoM that aren't 50 so I don't have a choice if I want to get the achievement. That being said, I do let the party claim mobs and then I kill. People are usually polite about it. I'm sorry you had one bad encounter but throwing everything into instances or saying 50s shouldn't be allowed in Behest is not the solution. And no one gets to claim a behest as their own. Everyone pays the same sub fees so you have to share and unfortunately, from time to time, you will run into jerks in this game. You just have to get over it.

Achievements are dumb. Why even have them in the first place? FFXI handled this better in the way of titles.. rather than giving people a worthless numerical value that doesn't mean crap besides "Oh, look, I've done more than you have, LoL."

I'm going to agree with OP on this. I think that if the OP is in a party with people and he's trying to do behest for experience - GOD FORBID THAT PEOPLE ENJOY THEIR LEVELING - the 50 should be the one to either a) leave the behest alone until these people leave or b) go to another camp altogether. There's absolutely no reason one 50 should have the entire reign of a public event just because he wants his pretty little number to grow; people should be more courteous and step down when they see other people in need of something.

Basically, in this case, experience points for a lower level always trump the need of some chump 50 and his achievement. Doesn't matter how you look at it, but I don't think anyone can come up with a valid defense for the person ruining a party's behest.

On the topic of instancing: just because it's open world doesn't make it fun. Have you ever tried doing caravan or behest with friends? You can get to a camp that has nobody on it, and your party can monopolize it for all of one run before some people without a party will come and take a spot. If instancing means people can do some of these events with their friends, and be able to communicate properly and make the most out of a run, I'm all for it. I'd probably feel the same way about behests, if I actually did those.

And before anyone attacks me saying "Hey, I looked at your XIVpad, you have 3 50s!" I'll have you know that the only achievement category I have unlocked is Grand Company-related stuff. I really don't give 2 damns about a pretty little number that won't do anything for me at all.

OP should be able to behest in peace with players his level without some 50 stomping all over his fun, whether intentional or not. It gives people a shoddy reputation, and actions like that aren't easily forgotten.

I have three 50s; WHM/CNJ, GLA/PLD, and LNC/DRG. On top of that, I already explicitly stated I don't give a rat's ass about achievements. Xbox Live, however, is a different story. But I digress. Also, I don't do behest or the lower caravans.

Could I do it, if I really wanted to? Certainly. But that's not the point.

The real question is: Would I do it? Would I do things like that to work toward an achievement if it meant possibly ruining another player's experience (and a lower player to top it off)?

No, I would not. Ever.

Most of the time high level players in behest act like PLs when I was on a lower level. They basically let me engage first and then nuke the mobs down for me. Only once have I met someone who wasn't being nice but I still grabbed most of the monsters for myself and killed them despite being 8 levels lower.

So he killing all the mobs. But the boss mobs and just sitting around waiting for us to kill them ruining 3 people's experience and fun to get himself an achievement is all ok? Are you even listening to yourselves?

This is one of the many reasons I was royally pissed to hear that they was bringing Achievements to FFXIV. I was so happy that XIV was an MMO that didn't have it because there was so many times in other games that one or two people would ruin an event because they didn't get their achievement or something along those lines. They hurt the community more than they help it but that is a tactics the game companies use to lure those type of people into buying their games. There are many gamers out there these days that don't care anything about anyone else they just care about getting some stupid digital achievement, they don't care if they have to walk over other people or ruin other peoples enjoyment just as long as they get their stupid achievement.
