While the teams stance on mods has been a little lenient, the one thing they seem to want to draw a hard line at is mods that will input commands into the client for you or otherwise communicate with the server. Even though you don't feel that gatherbuddy is automation, it is inputting commands to the client for you and is probably something that will get you banned if enough attention is called to it. Also automation doesn't have to be a completely hands off experience, it can be as simple as plotting a course and making your character follow it without your input even though you are acting once you get to the gathering node. Otherwise what I can say for sure is that I was still playing EQ when WoW launched and I remember at the time it being considered EQ for players that couldn't make it in Norrath, so yes there was a time where WoW at launch was considered the easy baby MMO.

One of the things that both WoW and EQII used to lure people away from EQ was the ability to play solo and small group which was something that was severely lacking in EQ. Both of those games had much more accessible solo experiences. So I do kind of laugh when people talk about vanilla WoW like it was anywhere near as hard as old school MMOs were. I played it. I played EQII. I still played EQ at the time. WoW and EQII were my break from my hardcore game.

I stopped EQ right around the time Planes of Power launched and it became too time consuming to continue, but earlier this year I was getting feelings of nostalgia and found Project 1999, which is a great trip down memory lane but I haven't been on in a while. I will always remember EQ as being and incredible world that felt more alive than anything I have played since despite the limitations of the technology at the time.

Ah, Planes. Good times there. Last I remember raiding in was some in Secrets of Faydwer. But I had been dialing it back since Omens at that point because right after Omens EverQuest II and WoW dropped. I was unhappy that all my game time was really planned out for me, either being a raid night or doing things toward raid night like getting keys and such. It's why I only casually did some raid stuff in EQII and did like one or two in WoW. I missed it, but I was burned out from the experience. Spent most of my time on the solo questlines in both games. It's only this tier that I got bitten by the hardcore bug again and tackled the most recent EX and finally started Savage. Really enjoying it and it's nice that I still can do a lot of other things I want to in the game when my static is done for that night.
