WoW's issue is that they never regulated addons. They cannot remove that option at this point as a lot of players would just quit. Now, they cannot even ban weakauras as not only did Blizzard take too long to do so, but they already admitted that they designed Raids and M+ around having weakauras. It's why I gave up on M+ as without weakauras, DBM, and the such then you're at a severe disadvantage. Yet having these things is like not even playing the game as a good weakaura, DBM, GTFO, and macros will essentially play the game almost for you. As it gives a ton of info and will tell you what to do, what to avoid, what to interrupt, what to debuff, what to cleanse on who and when, and ect.
I get why FF14 took a full on hard stance, as regulating it would be a pain.
Blizzard has no excuse as 99% of all addons are installed and used via Curseforge. Blizzard easily could have banned weakauras and told Curseforge that they would be blacklisted if they didn't ban weakauras as well. Removing weakauras from Curseforge would kill that addon. The only ones that would look for workarounds would be hardcores and Blizzard would know who would be using it. As Blizzard can easily look up the logs of guilds for the hardest clears if they so want to. It's not like weakauras hides itself from being used. Course, Blizzard never gave that addon any reason to hide itself.
This is also why I laugh when people say WoW is harder than FF14 (a game where you need to learn the mechanics per fight). That's a lie, as with addons even top M+ clears can be trivialized. Players don't need to know the fights that well as the addons will tell them what to do. Then there's Blizzard allowing carries to be sold and advertised on calendars and trade chat. Why, if I wanted, I could max out this M+ season really easily by just using Gold and getting a "pro" group with the right addons/weakauras to carry me. Heck, Mythic clears for the current raid tier are advertised 24/7 on trade chat too. I could get the Glory cheevo if I wanted and had enough gold.
