IGN: Why FF14 Fans Are Looking Forward to the Next 10 Years Starting With DawnTrail

    https://www.ign.com/articles/how-fin...with-dawntrail

Just thought I'd drop this gem here. Kind of an amusing read.

Figured here would be the best place to assess who is excited for the next decade of XIV!

Adding in one of my favorite moments:

“I’m a two-dyes truther,” says Karen. “I’m really excited for new glams! With every new expansion, I’m thinking about what clothes I’m going to wear.”

That is such a bizarre read lol like it would be more authentic if they just pasted tweets of peoples reactions etc but just some random names etc and the things these players have been saying it just comes across as weird. Oh well go IGN for weird articles XD

Jfc, who actually talks like this:
Livvy, a player who describes FF14’s politics as “at times great and at other times extremely harmful,” feels that the messaging leans into colonialist tropes, especially with the juxtaposition of a tense political conflict with a summer vacation concept. She says she hopes “for a respectful portrayal of the Latin American and Indigenous representation we've seen so far,” as well as that Creative Business Unit III is engaging with consultants from these communities to be sure they’re creating “an experience that all Warriors of Light, but especially people from the cultures being represented, can feel at home in.”

Quite a few of the vocal Twitter dwellers that the game now seeks to actively cater to and court. Thankfully the societal pendulum is swinging back towards normality in many countries and hopefully Square Enix will cease pandering to their ilk rather soon.

    Define normality in this context?

I mean it makes sense that not everyone talks like this. Some people have never had the opportunity to learn about those things, and some wouldn't be interested even if they did. Different strokes for different folks.

But it also makes perfect sense that some people do. It's the stuff of literary analysis and sociology, and some people dig that sort of thing. A conversation like that isn't in any way exceptional among the folks I tend to enjoy FF14 with.

I think that it's largely a grift at this point - especially when the concerns over cultural portrayals are often very one sided. The company benefits immensely from giving lip service to these people to keep them off of their backs and gets to tap into ESG funds for good measure.

It matters not how well or how badly 'exotic' cultures are portrayed. Pleasing their ilk is exceptionally hard because the goalposts will inevitably be moved.

It's also the sort of agenda that really strips away a lot of what makes fantasy settings interesting. It's not the real world and I think it's absolutely fine if the game touches on darker aspects of humanity - fictional or otherwise. Sanitising a setting to strip it of anything morally dubious or unpleasant simply serves to make very boring. I quite liked the grit present in the days of ARR when all the city states were selfish and flawed in their own unique ways and the main cast weren't spewing talking points that happen to align with students speaking at a modern day university.
