oh i know. and lawrence sucks. like very bad.lol! yeah Lynn's a bit lawless I'd say. It oddly enough works in those extreme balances of good and bad like that lotto ticket (nice btw!), but it's got proximity to B-town and the most beautiful urban beaches in the northeast. Still not as bad as Lawrence where I had jury duty there with a 3 hour deliberation on a case that spanned over 2 days. O_O Why can't they give us jury duty somewhere nice for a change like Newburyport or Salem?
I'm completely ignoring everything else here and just posting this. Rule for success:
1) Click enemy
2) Press '1' Key
3) ?????
4) PROFIT!
This.
It took me all of 2 seconds to figure out how to attack the first time I started up XIV....
Also, RTFM....
Seriously, the manual explained combat pretty well...

are you a dicpline of WAR or MAGIC cuz only they can attack.
there other classes are for gathering or crafting only.
Nevermind ...
With the new targeting system the OP could of had it on Friendly. If he did their is no way he could even target a mob. That may of happend. To the OP. What job are you? What city did you start in and what were trying to fight?
ahhhh play ffxi you may find it more ur likinmg if ur an ff fan anf 14 isnt ur thing...My computer can handle nearly everything it is quite new and tops FFXIV requirements. I think it is just that I'm personally too stupid to handle this game even with high end experience in other MMO's. I'm just asking myself if I'm not able to attack a monster standing before it (as an experienced player) .... what will a complete new player to MMO's be doing at this situation? It's very frustrating.
I just have never heard of someone having those kinds of problems, unless they had hardware issues.
I don't want to think your stupid, or that your posting this to be inflammatory.
Hmm, maybe your in a cut scene?
Sure, we all had problems with the UI back in pre-November patch. But at this point it has to be a unique situation.

Hey Valafjal.
When I first started, I had a little bit of a hard time figuring out the controls too. Like you, I came fresh from wow.
Since I don't know what you have figured out, I'm just going to start from the beginning.
The first thing you have to do is make sure your abilities are set on the bar. On the right hand side at the bottom of the screen there are some icons. Click the one on the furthest right. Look down to the third line for "Actions and Traits" (In the English version anyway. I don't know what another version might say.) Click it and you will see a line of boxes on the left, and actions on the right. Those are your abilities. The boxes go in order of your keyboard numbers at the top. If your abilities aren't set, go ahead and set them in line 1.
To check your action bar, you can hit "F" to go into action mode. This should make your bar come up.
What makes fighting cumbersome in my eyes, is that it's really easy to be trying to hit commands in passive mode. If you do that, nothing will happen. In wow, all that it takes to be in active mode is to hit an ability. This is not the case in FFXIV. You must make sure you are in active mode to fight. You can tell if you are by looking to see if your weapon is drawn and you are in ready stance.
You can get into active mode a few ways. One is hitting the "F" key. My preferred way is by right clicking the monster. Once in active mode, the easiest way to attack is to hit the number of the ability you want to use. If you are a spell caster, you will also need to hit enter after this.
I hope this helps.
