Nevermind ...
With the new targeting system the OP could of had it on Friendly. If he did their is no way he could even target a mob. That may of happend. To the OP. What job are you? What city did you start in and what were trying to fight?

I just have never heard of someone having those kinds of problems, unless they had hardware issues.
I don't want to think your stupid, or that your posting this to be inflammatory.
Hmm, maybe your in a cut scene?
Sure, we all had problems with the UI back in pre-November patch. But at this point it has to be a unique situation.

Hey Valafjal.
When I first started, I had a little bit of a hard time figuring out the controls too. Like you, I came fresh from wow.
Since I don't know what you have figured out, I'm just going to start from the beginning.
The first thing you have to do is make sure your abilities are set on the bar. On the right hand side at the bottom of the screen there are some icons. Click the one on the furthest right. Look down to the third line for "Actions and Traits" (In the English version anyway. I don't know what another version might say.) Click it and you will see a line of boxes on the left, and actions on the right. Those are your abilities. The boxes go in order of your keyboard numbers at the top. If your abilities aren't set, go ahead and set them in line 1.
To check your action bar, you can hit "F" to go into action mode. This should make your bar come up.
What makes fighting cumbersome in my eyes, is that it's really easy to be trying to hit commands in passive mode. If you do that, nothing will happen. In wow, all that it takes to be in active mode is to hit an ability. This is not the case in FFXIV. You must make sure you are in active mode to fight. You can tell if you are by looking to see if your weapon is drawn and you are in ready stance.
You can get into active mode a few ways. One is hitting the "F" key. My preferred way is by right clicking the monster. Once in active mode, the easiest way to attack is to hit the number of the ability you want to use. If you are a spell caster, you will also need to hit enter after this.
I hope this helps.
honestly ima start reporting rude posts.calling the OP stupid or make wise cracks isn't the proper ffxi community behavoir. And should be ashamed.
guy had a rough time. We were all newbies to an unfamilur mmo once.
Sorry but there is no reason to bully ppl. Sure the op coulda pick better words and admited and appologized after a few posts. You guys are acting like the flipping WoW or Aion community. You gonna bully anyone who remotely has a hard time. Why bother even playing an mmo if that is what your going to act like.
FFxi was known for its good community, ffxiv should be even more. Thats how we can get ppl to join, or at least stick with the game. I take pride in being an ffxi player as I helped anyone who needed it. Which is part of being a mmo community member. Not acting like a jerk.

You tell people not to be rude while calling them jerks and pathetic. Double standard

All this because someone forgot to put away their weapon before trying to set skills. :P

OP, its understandable having that issue. I for one came from WoW right when this game came out. Now I was playing on my god forsaken laptop on the lowest settings and still had issues. However just by looking in the manual of basic movement/targeting/attacking keys I had no issues at all even now.(BTW I play with a mouse and keyboard also, not a controller) It does take time to understand it, but like what other posters said you can change the keys to make movement exactly like WoW if you wanted to. As for skills, you basically have none in the beginning I think.(could be remembering wrong) However, you can not remove your basic attack move from your action slots, you can move it to a different number, but not off it if that was what you were trying to do. To do that though you would have to use a type command(which sucks) to move it, can do that one skill by just clicking. Anyway just give it some time to get used to the keys or adjust it if need be. Of the content out so far, it is a good game, just needs more and if you read the letters from the producer on the main site, they are constantly changing/adding things to help improve the MMO. So it is heading in a positive direction.
It is not the quantity of friends you have that determines your worth, its the quality of friends that does.
