this is why you shpould read the manuel and pay attention to the tutorial
ff games are well complicated. It does take a bit of time to learn the controls. I read ffxi book several times before playing (ps3 launch) What I did was do the press button and see what happens approuch. And i'm no game newbie either I play tons of rpg and been playing games since the nes and snes. More after 64 and even more after high school.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your answers. Again I'm not saying the game is bad or something I'm just saying it is at the moment too complicated to understand for someone who was played for ages on PC MMO's before and now is coming to FFXIV. Maybe it is because it is more a console MMO, maybe it is because of a totally differnet gameplay I don't really know. I will try again tomorrow if I can kill my first mob and maybe go though some guides and try to understand. But really I hope SE is going to make some improvements on this since I never had to read some tutorials or go through some complicated guides when switching to a new MMO ... until now everything was quite intuitive and self explaining after a few minutes... in FFXIV this is not case unfortunately, but it might be my fault on wrong expectations maybe...

You KNOW that's hardly a tutorial. That's basically Tanaka putting a little text insert that should have been in the manual in the first place. A Real tutorial is something like the opening level to Gears of War or The Last Story that actively introduces you to new concepts and guides you through it to make sure you learned exactly what you need to learn.

Obviously for us who played through FFXI, anything is a step up, but a little text box does not a tutorial make.
I know about tutorial and 99% of the time it is just a lil text box. Least in the rpg I played such as oblivion. you read the box press the button and you get a cookie.

I definitely agree with the OP about the UI/action bar... it definitely needs some streamlining work regarding its ease of use.

Edit - Before they make any kind of tutorial, they need some damn mouse-over tooltips BADLY >.>

its getting worked on. Should have an updated on it by may I think. unless its patch 1.17 they working on improving combat and battle ui. and doing 2 mnths of patching to fix it.

But honestly you can learn any games controls if you read them.

Most games never had tutorial Or not a babying one. Like Tomb raider 2. I just bought it in the psn store and Its taking time to learn the controls. The only tutorial is an assult corse and lara just tells you what to press, your expected to know what those buttons are.

you have to be in passive mode to set skills to your action bar. It would help to read how to play a game before complaining about its controls.

You should go back to WoW, its an established MMO with lots of content. You can be level capped in 2 weeks, and have both your primary and secondary crafting skills capped a couple days after that. Instant gratification... Yes,that seems to be what you expect. Plus they did the great reset, so all that gear you worked so hard for is now obsolete crap that any noob can exceed in the first cataclysm dungeon. Come back to this one after its first expansion pack, there will be plenty to do then.

This is most likely true, there is no tutorial telling you which npc to talk to first. The Uldah opening sequence had me confused for 30 mins or so, and I was a beta tester.

Honestly I thought that the ffxi tutorial (while being a little old world) was very good. You started in a safe zone, and just talking to your first npc you could ask for directions based on what you wanted to do (kill stuff, make money, craft, etc) Tanaka's style is a little rough to some to just through someone into the fight. On that note, I didn't have any problems myself.
