People take that to mean that the RPG elements are more important. But where are the RPG elements?

Does gear choice matter? No.
Does the story allow for meaningful roleplay and choices? No.
Does the gameplay contain puzzles? No.
Do party members have their own motivations and conflicts? No.
Does it have a complex world that responds to player choice? No.
Does the combat require strategic thinking? No.

Why is this an RPGMMO exactly?

Does gear choice matter? Yes. You can choose not to wear clothes, or you can wear clothes from sites like [redacted]. Both are fine.
Does the story allow for meaningful roleplay and choices? Yes. Your choice is to watch or skip.
Does the gameplay contain puzzles? Yes, mainly choosing which other game you're going to play once you beat FFXIV.
Do party members have their own motivations and conflicts? Yes. Do you give a comm to the naked catgirl or the naked femra?
Does it have a complex world that responds to player choice? Hell yes! Just check out the Quicksand on Balmung. There's a whole world filled with player choices. Do you choose the well-endowed equestrian-inspired Viera, or the equally well-endowed canine-inspired catgirl?
Does the combat require strategic thinking? Absolutely. How will you use the term "moist" multiple times in the span of five minutes without sounding repetitive?

I think this term came about because the person who came up with it was from WoW, which had moved away from a basic part of an RPG which is the story, because the story was delivered in textwalls and ignored by everyone and the lore books cost money to buy in order to know what was going on.

Does the gameplay contain puzzles? No.

The MSQ does, such as In From The Cold or the Ronkan Temple and aligning the owls. After that, not really except maybe jump puzzles and high-end content but obviously most people just watch a guide for high-end content so there's nothing for them to figure out.

We used to be supposed to figure out normal dungeon bosses and wipe a few times if needed so that we look at status effects, but the new direction is that they are to be obvious enough to get right on the first try.
