command for turning tool tips on and off?

I know there is one to turn off music /bgm but is there one for ability tooltips so I can turn them on/off at will?

Are you talking about Item Help and Action Help? The game differentiates between a Tooltip (also referred to in the config as "pop-up help", which is just the name of an action, item, or macro) and an Action Help or Item Help which is the window that pops up with information about what the action or item does.



If you are talking about Item Help and Action Help, you can toggle them using the /hud command:

/hud ActionHelp
/hud ItemHelp

If you want to disable them because they are next to your mouse cursor and you want them out of the way, a better option is just to move them to a fixed position. In the above image you can see the Action Help in the corner of the screen, away from where my mouse is (over the Engagement action). You can enable this in
/characterconfig > UI Settings > General



Once this is set to Fixed, you can move them out of the way exactly where you want using /hudlayout.
