WHY ARE THERE SHELLS NOT ATTACHED TO THEIR BODIES!?!?! WHAT ARE THEY!?!?!

Kojin aren't turtles at all!!! their shells are backpacks! Why? how? what are they really? It creaps me out to look at their detached shells. I saw one Kojin cleaning a shell (not even their own) and another encouraging them but it wasn't their shell either!
