At this point will FFXIV collapse if all mods and third party tools disappear?

The game was profitable with less then half the current player base and at a time when it delivered more content per patch on an actual 3 month cycle.

I think they stated the game would still be profitable enough if it maintained 200-300k players back when arr first launched and had around that number of people playing during launch. But with how big the player base is now and how long mods have been around and allowed as long as it remained hush hush they would lose a decent chunk of players. They would still have a large playerbase but would lose a good chunk if they decided to go hardcore full ban mode on modders or had some software to detect mods. They seem to not mind mods as long as people don't openly talk about it then that's when actions get taken.

Would it collapse? I don't think so. A bunch of people play the game completely vanilla or aren't too attached to mods to care.

Now would it result in a shitstorm, lead to immediate loss of revenue and create a rift between the devs and a significant part of the playerbase, including but not limited to raiders, RPers, "extreme" RPers and people with latency issues? Yes.

There are absolutely some players that would quit if mods were gone but I don't think it would cause a mass exodus or anything. That said, it would upset a decent chunk of the playerbase even if they stay so I don't think it would be in Square's interests to ever lock down the client.

Personal opinion: I survived heavensward crafting. Didn't particularly enjoy it. What we have now is a massive improvement.

I honestly don't get it, either. Never used mods. I get some people love the things, but even many who do don't play because of them. The entire console part of the playerbase literally CAN'T use them.

Also, dude, I don't have Piety melded in any slots. I only put Quicktongue on things when Crit and Det are maxed out because I don't like Direct Hit on a HEALER and would rather have more throughput/quicker heals if I need them. I play exclusively PF, no static, meaning I have to make up for other people's mistakes far more often in a far more wonky skill pool where even a bit faster spell time can be useful. Moreover, I have no issues with MP regen and don't oom, so my SPS (all of THREE materia slots, the HORROR!!! /gasp) isn't detrimental. It's a DPS loss vs Direct Hit melds, but only a minor one, and the points make little difference. Besides which, Healer is the one role that actually does have flexibility with melds "to taste". And my "taste" is preferring slightly faster speed to slightly larger hits.

But tell me, since you're a master who has learned how to play: What would be the total change in my overall damage if I traded those three SPS Xs for DHit Xs? Do the math and tell me what the difference would be. 0.1%? 0.035%? 1 whole percent? What have you got?

(And so you know, materia melding is not "how to play the game"; at best it's an ancillary argument about "how to optimize", but has nothing to do with PLAY).

As to the gear, I gear as I get tomes over time for it, and I also gear three roles at the same time (Healer, Tank, and Caster). I don't raid (well, VERY rarely do), so I don't have tons of raid gear for those spots. Why would I have gear from content I don't do? That makes no sense. Making a question post on the Balance doesn't supply the player with raid pieces.

This happens to me most of the time. Even when I'm not being active in a thread I'm attacked in it. By the people who insist I am never attacked and never attacked unfairly. In a thread about third party tools, someone's going to armory pages to bash and insult players. Which is a pretty good argument for why third party tools are bad, too, since they only enhance that sort of harassment.

Something I've noticed here. There are some trolls and a few really bad trolls which seem to be the ringleaders here. If someone ever defends a person they've targeted for their bullying/harassment, then they immediately swap targets and pound that person into the dirt. In another thread, I was defending someone from a dogpile and the bullies doing it immediately swapped targets to me and have spend pages on pages continuing to pound me and not let it go (ironically, while telling me I just need to let it all go). And the person I was defending I guess ran off scared trying to get away.

It's absolutely schoolyard bully behavior. I'm glad you're sticking through it, though.

Dixie is literally telling him that his character is melded the wrong way, that's not trolling, if anything that's actually informative.

This game's community has been anti-advice for years. Every system in the game and its TOS supports not having to learn your job/the game correctly, so the community has been trained to treat given advice as a bad thing.

The game has become too comfy in recent years. A healthy learning environment is good, but the game's TOS and its various systems encourage players to ignore the idea of getting better at the game. While going to the opposite extreme wouldn't be good either, something needs to change.
