Is Playstation holding back the future of FFXIV?

I don’t actually believe this. It’s a matter of opinion.

Comparing specs isnt a matter of opinion when fanboying over a console and having console wars is already stupid and we shouldn't be advocating dropping any console or not allowing the exclusivity crap regardless of what box people think is better. FFXIV should be available on as much consoles as possible regardless of its "power" or whatever company the console is from as long as the game can run decently on it.

They will never drop all Playstation support. Their ties to Sony are too strong. That's not worth considering, nor is it necessary.

I just call it maintenance mode because there are games actually in maintenance mode that get more updates and content than XIV in its 'Live Service' form.

If they're getting new content updates on a regular basis as opposed to just maintenance patches, they are not in maintenance mode. Some players just like to throw "maintenance mode" around as a way of saying a game isn't producing content they're interested in anymore.

A very big fraction of the user base plays on PS4 in Japan, not to mention USA and EU. Ending support for Playstation 4 right now would be suicide. Maybe it would be worth revisiting the idea in two years, after the PS5 has had more time to get into people's hands.

This topic is as old as FFXI; so 21 years at this point.

"PS2 Limitations" became the "PS3 Limitations" and now is "PS4 Limitations" lol. At least FFXIV drops support when new consoles come out.

When it's coming from PC-first development, it really doesn't matter. To tangent a bit and illustrate a point in the process: the bigger problem is console back to PC, and that runs into plenty of problems regardless of platform. Basically every console-first XS/PS5 game leans heavily on their ultra-high-speed decompression, and DirectStorage is only just getting good enough to make ports viable without either massive engineering efforts or doing what most do and just letting the performance going to hell and taking the beating in the press and reviews that comes with it. XSX games have had it easier (relatively) in this regard with ports because the XSX SSD only has about half the output potential.

Also, "isn't easy to work with" hasn't been a thing since the PS3.

The consoles are not the problem, 9 years old laptops with sh*tty onboard IGPs are the real problem. I can remember when Endwalker came out, that some people had huge sound distortion problems. It came out, that this problem mainly occurs on AMD Bulldozer/Piledriver-based CPUs. AMD Bulldozer was introduced in the year 2011. The people played the game on such old PCs. It is crazy but it is what it is.
