At the basic level, it's the same here though unlike WoW the story quests aren't mostly optional. The additional content gets unlocked as you reach milestones in the MSQ instead of being able to unlock the content based on your character level.

The big difference is that WoW has a heavy emphasis on level cap content from the current expansion. Here, the story is important and they try to keep content from all expansions somewhat relevant (if only through roulettes for tomestones).

So I'm looking for something that has a community that can make it fun while doing the content on the game.
FFXIV doesn't really have an equivalent to M+. Raiding is different here.

Arguments over MMORPG or RPGMMO aside, Normal mode raiding is done through Duty Finder. Just queue up and you'll get matched to a group. EX Trials and Savage raiding are done through PF. It definitely can help to find a permanent group ("static") for Savage raiding even if statics can come with the same problems as raiding guilds in WoW.

Community here can be very involved in non-raid content in addition to raid content because there is a lot of non-level cap content worth doing depending on your interests. If you're only interested in raiding, then you'll probably find content here on the light side. The last thing you want to do is play this game as if it was WoW because it is different beyond the basic "do quests and level up to unlock content".

If you are not comfortable with joining a Free Company because of your WoW guild experience, then try joining Novice Network if you're still eligible. It's helpful to be part of a group that can answer your questions about what to expect and how to unlock content and find groups for it.
