They could always keep a record of it on the lodestone...so regardless of what they change to their old name will show up on the new name profile, etc.

I figure if they make name changing a one time thing why not just have a title "formerly known as x" so people can adjust to the new name or if you meet an old friend who doesn't recall you by said name you can pull out the title and they can go oh hey it is you!

Anyone know if we'll be able to rename our retainers? Cause really, I'd like that ability. I mean it's supposed to be their nickname anyway... XD or can we do it now and I just haven't seen it?

Well, it's not easy, but it is possible...technically. You just have to either sell a bunch of junk in your retainer's inventory or find really good (and patient!) friends to hold all their things for you while you release your retainer from service and hire a new one.

I know it's a pain, but it does let you choose a new name. I've replaced both of my retainers since the game launched.

I know that option is always there and right now, it doesn't matter much if you release a retainer or not. Later on, after 2.0 I heard that the retainers may get levels or some such thing? In which case, it could be problematic to keep deleting a retainer if one wants to rename it.

Tbh, I was hoping that they would just give us the ability to change the nickname without deleting the retainer. Still, it seems as if that's the way to go about it.

hope they don't manage to make it work; if my friend tomato changes his name to potato, I'll be the one guy who calls him tomato forever. People from xi call me by my xi name.
I actually decided I wouldn't change into male miqote because of my name. Two years together yo.

While that may be, titles can be changed/ignored just as easily (I don't mean change as in it could say "formerly known as X" to "Y", but someone may not want to use said title anymore)... though I'm not against giving the kind of titles either, I just think at the very least, name change histories should be shown on a character's profile page in the Lodestone.
