Wish there were melee DPS without positionals

I don't want to take positionals away from anyone who loves them, but I do wish it wasn't a part of literally every melee DPS class. That way folks who like that kind of thing could enjoy it, but there would also be an alternative for those who don't.

My answer is unironically and in a non condescending way

Play BLM; at this point it’s basically a melee by proxy or if you don’t want to deal with BLM play a tank, none of them have positionals

So I understand the tank suggestion, as that's basically been what I've done up until now. But I'm genuinely lost on the suggestion to play BLM, which I do play and in my estimation seems to be among the furthest things from a melee DPS: mobility issues, lengthy casts, lots of range, as opposed to melee DPS which generally have mostly instant-casts that don't hinder their mobility, while generally needing to be at close range with the exception of a small handful of limited-use abilities. And of course, there's the aesthetic of casting a fireball versus actually hitting someone with a stick. I'm guessing you're talking about some aspect I'm not seeing?

I guess my experience is coloured by savage but in savage BLM basically plays as a third melee, you are functionally always in melee range, you don’t really have to move (a lot like the melee) and you do the damage of a melee (while the rest of the ranged do much worse damage)

Think about it instead in terms of re-positioning. You only need to be anywhere but the rear of the boss twice per minute on NIN, and only have to actually change position twice per 10 GCDs on DRG. So unless you're going to the level of optimizing against unfortunately timed boss spins... there are already melee for whom positionals are a non-issue.

Just wait for 20% echo, Then you can ignore positional and still meet dps check

Most of the time you can ignore them anyway. Ninjas for example missing it's positional on armour crush and just staying behind the boss was a whopping loss of 2 whole potency per second.

In real world terms that's immeasurable over the average encounter length. 1 single rng crit would have a bigger impact on your dps.

Samurai much the same. Or at least it was last time I played it.. just staying still and missing a positional every cycle worked out to be again a loss of ~2 potency per second.

They should just remove them entirely. Or go the 1.23 route put the positional at the beginning. If you hit it. Boom combo. If you miss it. Derp! No combo for you.. had more weight an impact than an teeny weeny potency boost.

Used to be that missing your positionals would either not generate kenki at all, or generate less than what you'd get for hitting them. When your 2-3 big hits (Higanbana, Madare, Guren/Senei) required spending 20/50 kenki, the impact on the player's DPS could be fairly significant.

Now that it's been standardized to "hit slightly harder", Kaiten has been removed, and Guren/Senei had their costs slashed to 25... well, none of it really matters anymore, yeah.
