Should I have reported this?

What an odd person to want to report someone for telling you what they honestly thought of your characters looks. good or bad...nicely or abruptly is irrelevant. I wouldn't do that to anyone BUT if someone does...so what!

What is wrong with people nowadays that they can not even hear anything negative? Step outside the bubble.

2 days ago I queued for The Dusk Vigil (with my alt character, as a DPS). After completing the duty, just after I posted a "thank you" in the party chat and did a player commendation, half a second before I clicked "Exit", one of them obviously felt the need of typing this in the party chat: "UR CHARACTER IS HIDEOUS" (yes, in caps). I don't know if he meant me (my alt is a female Roegadyn) or if he meant someone else in the party. It doesn't even matter if I was the target of this. No one should be the target of insults, be it about race or outfit of their character.

I'm not trying to be "snow-flaky", but is this what FFXIV has become? I didn't see this kind of rudeness before in this game. Where did this behaviour come from?

After I had clicked Exit and realized how rude that player's text in the party chat was, I wasn't sure if I should report him. Should I have? Should I report next time such a thing happens?

Don't worry about that, and the person who did that is not worth your time or for that sake anyone elses, if anything you should feel sorry for the moron for being able to stoop this low.

Comments like these are why I have friends who like playing MMOs but absolutely refuse to group with random players for dungeons. They got plenty of this in WoW back in the day and they are not going to tolerate it anymore. For every "I'm quitting FFXIV and here's why" post you see on the forums, there are many more players out there who just quietly leave or refuse to engage with MMOs in the first place. Telling them to "grow a thicker skin" or "it's not that bad of an insult" is not convincing.

It's also probably a large part of the reason why all the MSQ dungeons are made to be single-player with NPCs. People just don't want to deal with hostility and insults when they're supposed to be having fun.

You have to wonder, is this the first time that player has insulted others in chat? If they did, it obviously didn't come with any consequences. Why would they stop now?

They insulted the appearance of a character. Not a person. Why should that come with a consequence?

See here is the difference, by calling them a moron you are insulting the person. A person has feelings. Calling a character ugly should have no impact, they are not real.

Isn't the intent, behind the comment about a characters appearance, to insult that person though? Otherwise, why would anyone say something like that?

They insulted the appearance of a character. Not a person. Why should that come with a consequence?

People put thought and time into the appearance of their character, face, hairstyle, glamour, etc. In a way, it is a "creation" of theirs. By saying the character is hideous, you are saying their creation sucks. And unless someone is asking for a critique, there is literally no reason to say something like that to a complete stranger except to get under their skin. It's just antagonistic. Otherwise, why would the person bother saying it at all? And why do you think they said it after the dungeon was complete, and not at the very beginning? They knew it wouldn't go over well, and didn't want to mess up their run.

Have you ever had someone compliment your character's glam, portrait, etc.? Did you have no reaction whatsoever? Did you just think "This means nothing to me, it is mere ones and zeroes in a computer. I have no connection to this."

But again, it doesn't matter whether you're directing a comment toward the character, or the person behind the screen playing it. The intent is to influence the player's mood either way. Telling someone you like their character is meant to make them happy. Telling them their character is hideous is meant to annoy or upset them. One of these things is a kind gesture that makes the game more fun to play with others. The other is an open provocation meant to illicit a negative response.

Nothing about reporting indicates 'you can't handle it' - it indicates that someone needs to learn how to behave in public.

The notion that there's some sort of upright resilience in not just being able to brush it off but then also letting those toxic behaviors run on unchecked is ridiculous.

You are assuming the intent, thus creating an issue by said assumption. Going based solely off the comment the character was ugly. That is all we have to go by.

It seems like you view your character like it is art. It is not, so why afford it the same considerations?

Way I see say if someone likes the shirt I am wearing, cool. If another person says it looks like shut, I just shrug it off, and do not take it personally. They are saying my shirt is ugly not me.

If this was art I would see where you are coming from, but a character is not art.
