If you aren't playing a person's ideal tastes, they probably think everything outside that scope is hideous. I have been called ugly before too. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. You could change to what they like then someone else might call you generic. You're never going to meet everyone's tastes. Though people calling it out is rude af. I just usually ignore it cause there's no point in worrying about it. Really is up to you if it bothers you enough or not.

Others have handled thoughts on reporting or not; I'm just going to comment that this part in particular feels like very much an over-reaction. Are you generalizing about what the entire community has become based on a single, extremely rare incident you encountered that you're not even sure was meant to be offensive? For example, I've been playing on and off since 2015, and as my main MMO for the past 2-3 years or so. I can still count on one hand the number of "toxic" people I've encountered in random groups - it's very, very rare in my experience. But that doesn't mean I've never, ever encountered it at all. Even very rare things by their nature will still happen eventually.

Now, if you start seeing behavior like this consistently, then I'd say there may be a change and a problem there. But it sounds like going overboard to make such sweeping comments over one extremely isolated incident.

You said it yourself, you're not entirely certain if the comment was even aimed at your character or not.

As I said: If I wasn't the target, it would still be rude. Besides me (I play and queue at Twintania), there was one player from Lich and 2 of Raiden. I guess the 2 Raiden guys were in party when queuing. It was of the Raiden guys. The chances are that he meant either me or the player from Lich.

If all they did was insult your character and not you, that is quite tame.

No one can know in what way and how strongly you're attached with your character. Insulting the character is still an insult.

Being the sort of comment that sounds like it's coming from a 10 year old acting cocky, I'd just assume it was a 10 year old acting cocky and move on.

Good point. But if this was a teenager, it will serve him well learning some lesson about community rules, politeness, mutual respect and being responsible for his or her actions.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I'm gonna report such stuff if it happens again. FFXIV is/was kinda famous for enforcing better manners, compared to other MMOs. We should keep this up.

2 days ago I queued for The Dusk Vigil (with my alt character, as a DPS). After completing the duty, just after I posted a "thank you" in the party chat and did a player commendation, half a second before I clicked "Exit", one of them obviously felt the need of typing this in the party chat: "UR CHARACTER IS HIDEOUS" (yes, in caps). I don't know if he meant me (my alt is a female Roegadyn) or if he meant someone else in the party. It doesn't even matter if I was the target of this. No one should be the target of insults, be it about race or outfit of their character.

After I had clicked Exit and realized how rude that player's text in the party chat was, I wasn't sure if I should report him. Should I have? Should I report next time such a thing happens?

For most races i would actually say it highly depends on the face option you picked but roegadyn female? Heck all the roe ladies look gorgeous, they can't look bad no matter how hard they try!

Probably going to be an unpopular opinion but that's never stopped me.

1. Probably not reportable.

2. If it is i wouldn't think it's worth the time.

3. If it is worth the time...grow thicker skin. If you are offended over someone saying your pixels are ugly then you would not survive a day in retail. Or being outside for long. You'll just be a big ball of "offended".

If it wasn't directed at you personally, I wouldn't. Saying your character is ugly has little to no gravity and is not worth reporting imo because by the end of the day the character isn't you. And also being rude doesn't always necessarily dictate a report, it's what they were rude for that matters and in this case isn't worth the time of day. Especially if you don't know if that comment was aimed toward you, and as mentioned before could have been something taken out of context or have been in a wrong chat and meant for someone who was perchance asking for feedback, honest feedback. <--- Context is everything.
