Is Meracydia going to be a a inspired retelling of FFIX?

Sephirot being a bit of a clue here, but..

But considering most of FFXIV has been a love-letter to the classics, I think IX is one the few left to have a bit of theme here in a content patch.

We had a lot of FF I-VIII and XI being represented in some content.

But I think not IX, and X as the last of the classics.

Yes I know there was that FFX event years ago, but...it was not much.

It would be nice to have blitzball be the big thing in this game to represent X more properly.

You know how I pictured Meracydia's current state? An inspiration mix between FF8 and FF9.

There are 2 major factions antagonizing each other, one that developed using what Allagans left behind and created an advanced city (inpired by FF8's Esthar) - And another one of traditional people who worshipped Dragons and the Warring Triad (led by a female hrothgar), inspired by FF 9's Madain Sari / Iifa tree, and you are caught in between the conflict of the two nations without a clear view of who's the good and who's the bad guys.

Meracydia got basically bombed and nuked by the allagan empire and all cultures there probably destroyed as we learned from the triad questline and from Tiamat. So i picture it either as a barren wasteland like the burn or as a land that got reclaimed by nature and tribal societies. Since it's not thaaat much time since the allagan empires fall i don't think Meracydia had much time to rebuild too much if they don't retcon previous loredrops.

Isn't that like 3000 years prior? If so (because I'm not exactly sure) there's more than enough time for civilizations to build up and the wasteland state to flourish once more.

I think it was more 6000 years ago, but judging from after how the burn still looks like i guess it depends on how big the Allagans attack on Meracydia really was. We have to keep in mind that it seems Eorzea had no contact with Meracydia at least it didn't came up by now in the story so i assume that it might be still ashes and ruins since the allagan empire wiped basically all the developed societies there out plus the dragons too.

In the end everything could be possible ofc, i just find it strange that we have lore bits and travelers from literally all places even the new world was mentioned heavily in the bluemage quests. But Meracydia a fairly big continent one would say is dead silent when it comes to the story. No trading, no records of people exploring it and nothing else so there has to be a reason to why. Might be cause it is still a dead wasteland or cause there aren't any seafaring societies there yet is my assumption.

The little post-2.0 knowledge we have about Meracydia is that the Allagan war turned nearly the entire continent into a giant wasteland and even today there are parts that are uninhabitable while the few that live there attack all outsiders.

In 1.0 there was a little more knowledge about them, but whether or not that's canon is a different story. In 1.0, there were witch doctors who were mentioned in leves and you had to gather or craft things for the Limsan traders to send to them. Other tidbits of lore describe the people there as "primitive tribes".

All that can be retconned, but as of what we know now, there's not really any reason to go there and nothing to see unless the writers throw out some old pages and fill in some blanks.

Also bear in mind that a lot of the little we know is from the point of view of possible 'unreliable narrators', which might have points that can be clarified, without necessarily retconning.

Hmm... I picture Meracydia to be like a fantasy version of Australia...

A few spread out civilized areas

    Lots of dangerous wilderness

Everything present can kill you no matter how small or cute it may be. (And its the most harmless looking things that are actually the most dangerous. Kill giant dragon without breaking a sweat. Get bitten by cute tiny fuzzy spider and die from 1,000,000 HP per tic poison DoT)

Oda has repeated the same Meracydia lore at least once when asked about it, so it seems to be the state of their existence right now even within the company, at least as presented to us. That isn't to say it can still change but I'd personally rather go to the places closer to home that haven't been explored but have been teased.

I was expecting 6.4 to end the void nonsense and 6.5 would be all about the next expansion. But it looks like it's going to drag on and it still hasn't been resolved, meaning the next expansion will have less prep leading up to it and payoff once we get there, especially so if it's for a whole continent unrelated to anything going on right now.

    I know, right?

There's very little time for a meaningful build up, which leads me to speculate that is either one of the following:

    a) Something secondary triggered as a side-effect, from .5 (part1) to .55 (part2), of the void arc resolution, which will lead into the next story.

    b) Something really simple, like for example, Krile asking you to acompany her to wherever that missive she got leads to, but in this case there's very little cliffhanger value on its own (as in, without the teaser we'll get this week).
