Linkshell dissolving is always a huge problem for any guild housing for any MMO. I think there should be an automatic passing of leadership of guild to the vice president, because this is not just about the housing, but it's about the LS as well. If the leader suddenly deletes his character, the remaining members should not become impotent. Quirks like these will need to be worked out.the problem is,what happens if the ls were to dissolve.who would keep the airship?unless the ls leader paid for the whole thing himself,it would be unfair to other members that chipped in to help build it
anyway, the easy way to solve how members can board once the airship is in the sky is to have a hanger for smaller ships.members can pay to have some npc fly them to the main ship.or the ls can have its own home base where they employ pilots to fly the smaller ships
Your idea might work. The main LS airship stays in the sky. And there should be a 'small airship' that can carry you back and forth from cities to the main one. This may have to be instanced.
I have thought about the idea of the airship just be an instance up in the sky. You can still go outside, breathe fresh air, but it may need to be immobile. Like a guild house in the sky in the shape of airship. It may end up be like this, to prevent like what you said. Like picture below, it can just be static.-Airships and their hangers should be their own separate zones with no one actually able to fly the ship, FFX style. Why? Because then your airships would be kind of like this....*ahem*
Free Company Leader: Alright guys, what do we want to do today? Leves? Dungeon raids? AF quests?
Random Member: ....Let's go to Camp Bearded Rock and crash into the noobs!
Leader: ...........LOLOK!!
*vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom*
-Upkeep on the ship is vital. Repairs need to be made, fuel needs to be stockpiled...give the DoL's and DoH's something to do other than just build the thing. A fuel cost to get to certain areas would be good for this, as well as sustainable damage over time (general use, battles, dungeons, etc.). Airship can never truly be destroyed, but can be rendered neigh upon useless without proper upkeep.
-Dungeons need to be completely instanced, just like they are now. It would be awful waiting in line on your airship for those floating dungeons for the next Company to get out.
OR. It can be that airships are only navigable to go to cities and dungeon entrances. Airships are prohibited from landing in middle of Camp Bearded Rock and disrupt activities.
As I said, there should be some form of upkeep, the bigger the more expensive.
I support floating dungeons being instanced, to prevent long queues. The battleground for PvP can probably be done by signing up for PvP from a board in the city somewhere. And the schedule posted on the board saying that today, at 3PM, LS 1 vs. LS2 scheduled to pvp.
In conclusion, this may seem like a huge task for SE. But in the simplest form, these airship linkshell housing can just be an instance in the sky. Having them navigable would probably be more intensive work.
As I said, maybe the airships can only be navigable to cities, along an invisible gated path, so that it is not allowed to just roam roam roam everywhere and be parked everywhere.

How about we build our houses in outer space instead?
I love the idea, but I would still want to have neighbourhoods where you can build LS/personal houses as well.
Good idea. +1
This opens up a ton of questlines for not only building but upgrading and modifying your airships with all the cool little things (like the synth aid furnaces and home point aetheryte.) Plus with the addition of this, it adds content for all four disciplines. Very great ideas in this thread.
Most important question is: Can you fly your LS Airship to battle Bahamut?
Actually, airships as guild housing is old hat. Dungeons and Dragons Online uses airships as guild housing. It's expensive and likely involves upkeep but that's all I know about it (wasn't in a guild that had an airship). Personally, I think it's an interesting idea that could potentially make use of those extra spaces in the towns that have no obvious use (not talking about the future mog houses).
Idea needs some work, and some things might not be possible like actually piloting it yourself, but it would be pretty cool none the less.
In Allods Online you can pilot the Air Ship, and multiple people need to handle the ship to ship battle (or monsters) and PvP boarding. I think Tanaka planned something like that before he get booted.
