There really isn’t much competition in the space at the moment for better or worse. WoW has proven it can implode at will and while they’ve had a decent expansion will that trend continue or will it plummet again. ESO content isn’t anywhere close to the bigger mmos and we talk about our devs not listening they have it worse. Upcoming mmos blue protocol and throne of liberty won’t do much in the long haul, might get a lost ark situation once more (I want BP to do well as it has an interesting foundation)

GW2 and any others I missed just don’t hit the same retention as WoW and 14 does… so yeah the MMO space is a bit weird at the moment. But I do agree that I honestly will see a demographic shift in 7.0. A lot of the foundational work and QoL leads me to believe they’re going to be changing something long term… guess we will see in some capacity in 5 days.

I was - and to an extent still am - looking forward to Blue Protocol. I'm just bitterly disappointed that the Western version is being handled by Amazon. Especially after the sort of changes that they introduced to Lost Ark.

Ashes of Creation is promising a lot of things that intrigue me, though whether it delivers on those promises and intended goals remains to be seen. I'm cautiously optimistic, though many MMO's have an unfortunate habit of squandering their potential, creating scandals or just making unnecessary missteps.

I mostly bounce between ESO and WoW at the moment. I'm hoping 7.0 goes back to 'classic fantasy' roots but I'm not holding my breath.

They will never manage to create exploratory content or horizontal progression that is liked or even deemed a success by the entire player base because there are people that just simply dislike those systems and what they offer.

You could throw an entire expansion worth of resources and you simply won't get that result either. No point in entertaining rumors created by the player base frankly, unless there is an actual basis for believing it, outside of "My senses tell me this must be true".

But yes, there is some serious copium going on if people are under the belief that 7.0 will act as a major dynamic change - The only difference being whether or not there is long-standing content again, e.g., exploratory content, but then they're probably coming as close to how innovative they can be with that content unless they have a serious 180 in philosophy change and innate fear of intertwining multiple systems rather than leaving them as distinct. e.g., exploratory content amounting to more than just a zone where you do combat.

Oh, Blue Protocol.

Blue Protocol's chasing the Genshin market but with an approach more akin to PSO2 NGS, so a) nobody with the sort of brain damage that leads one to post in this thread is likely to be into it and b) it's going to fail on its own merits long before AGS' effect matters. It's been in development for nine years and the final product suggests they were about as conceptually behind the curve for most of those years as they were when Gundam Evolution missed the boat and was then promptly driven into the sea. The day Bandai Namco figures out online games is the day I rejoice, and at this rate I expect that energy will manifest in the form of me rolling in my grave.

Show me some content that the ~Entire Playerbase~ approves of that isn't just literally free stuff being handed to them and I can all but guarantee I can find someone who most certainly disapproves of it on my friends list, much less anywhere else in the FF14 internet sphere. MMOs not only basically never produce content that the Entire Playerbase loves, but should be deeply skeptical on the off-chance they come up with something that appears to be universally loved because it often signals that there's probably something deeply cursed about it that hasn't manifested yet.

I did not realize it is pro-casual to introduce housing lottery bugs, write the worst post-expac storyline we've seen in this game, and continue screwing up character customization for Viera and Hrothgar

Heavensward post-exPac was not great too and the "critically claimed" expansion had initial failures like Diadem. Sometimes we have great post-expansion MSQ like Stormblood and Shadowbringers, but sometimes isn't that special. However, we still have great stories in such cases. In Heavensward we had the scholastic quest with a following up of church crisis and The Paths We Walk where we unlock Haurchefant emote. In The Paths We Walk the WOL travel the world to see how people are going on and the character is trying to find himself after a tremendous trauma. There is many interesting moment like sultana's perspective of ARR ending, camping, etc. Raid lore was better than the post expansion MSQ.

In Endwalker we received: Tataru Grand Endeavor, Omega quest, Pandaemonium and Myths of the realm. Side stories more interesting than the MSQ.
It is what it is, you can't have everything 100% perfect all the time.

EU was supposed to get a new datacenter this summer. So where it is? Did player numbers projected way below expected?

Sproutbringer happened but after all those new and WoW players seeing expansion progress patch by patch (slowly with breaks, what did you expect?) then the interest dropped down. 7.0 will see high queues again but in a month it will be back as usual.

Still, I think 7.0 and the idea for the next expansion patch progression can be make or break for quite a bit of players, especially those newer ones. If nothing changes then we already can write down most if not all gear and tier releases... And don't forget the graphics revamp. Not to mention I have a weird feeling they will re-use First and it existing zones/characters for the next expansion while adding much less new ones.

It wants to be hardcore PvP game so good luck with that (New World pivoted hard after receiving the feedback). Either they will release like that and devolve into a niche game controlled by sweatlords and bots or they will bulge and move towards "single player experience with shared world"
