Square Equinox's problem with mouse side buttons

I rage quit today in a group, not my proudest moment. I do not do it often. Do I feel bad about leaving my teammates? Yes.

I am trying to accommodate all of the skills you are giving me. Never has an MMO asked me to use SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT with conjunctive keys all at once to perform all of my skills. So congrats. Lesson learned.

The problem is that I am trying to use them in tandem with the keyboard keys. But one time I log in you recognize these mouse side buttons, and the next you do not? One minute my side button is NUM 5 and the next it's an arrow button?

Is it a coincidence that it usually happens with an update? I have to log in, log out, and then maybe it works?

Sounds like a profiling issue on your mouses end TBH.

Check numlock then, cuz if its detecting as the arrows, that means numlock is off if you have it set to numpad keys.

Its not insulting. Its troubleshooting. This is the behavior of num keys when num lock is off.

Well it doesn't ask you to keybind everything except on a controller.

It's better to keybind frequent actions like GCDs but when you have a rare ability that you don't use very much, there isn't much harm in just clicking it because you have a whole 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 seconds to move your cursor to it.

If you expect to activate a NumPad key and you end up activating an arrow key instead, Valkyrie_Lenneth is correct to suggest you check your NumLock, as that is one of the possible causes for this behavior on an input device acting as a NumPad.

However, as someone who is very good with computers I'm willing to bet that Shift+NumPad is your problem and I'm going to strongly discourage you from doing either of the following:

• Using Shift as a modifier when binding NumPad keys
• Binding NumPad keys when using Shift as a modifier

The NumLock setting is effectively just a reverse ShiftLock for NumPad buttons. If you hold Shift while NumLock is active, it will override the NumLock and the NumPad will behave as if NumLock is off.

Your two major possible solutions are

• Continue to use Shift but don't bind NumPad to your mouse buttons
• Continue to bind NumPad to your mouse buttons but don't use Shift

"But if I don't use Shift I don't have enough modifiers to handle all my buttons!"
You can create chords with Ctrl+Alt instead. Then your modifiers would be Ctrl, Alt, and Ctrl+Alt. Not binding the NumPad to your mouse buttons would probably be less awkward though.

Honestly though, I hope OP is able to get the issue sorted so they can fully enjoy the game.
