the other thing that bugged me was the overuse of dungeons, and then for a change they have you enter from the other end. yeah, I played with people that spent thousands of real life dollars to get an outfit. wasnt "pay to win"...mostly.. but was certainly pay through the nose to look good. that and that you were rewarded for basically logging in and going afk lol

I think the game grew significantly with EW for various reasons (culmination of the end of a 9 year story, some WOW backlash and people flooding to XIV to spite wow or just following Asmongold), but has since naturally dropped a bit given we are in the lull between expansions and stabilized.

The stabilization at least financially is still ahead of all the prior expansions, but of course as more people grow bored and discontent with some major decisions - such as the Relic grind and focusing on things like Island, all eyes will be on 7.0 to see how long it stays successful. I'm hopeful but I can understand why some are ambivalent.

I have played since 2.0 and have been subbed for 90% of that time with a couple of breaks in lulls between expansions. 6.0 has changed that for me. I have hardly been subbed since it came out. It sadly has killed my love for this game. It's a combination of things, the biggest one for me is the poor MSQ. I hated the 6.0 storyline, it's far and away for me the weakest of all the expansions.

You can't please everyone however, and I would have kept my sub if I was happy doing side content, but there is no side content in 6.0 I enjoy. Everything just feels like a regurgitation. All content is a Linear dungeon after linear dungeon, whether its 4, 8 or 24 man, it is the same old concept again and again. The only change is adding more and more flashy graphics to content. It's all so samey. Job changes throughout 6.0 have been dull. Jobs are becoming more and more similar. The changes to scholar and summoner for me sum up 6.0, smoother - yes. Easier to play - yes, but far more boring. The pet changes to scholar particularly makes it feel like the soul of the job has been ripped out.

Deep dungeon is the one thing I sort of enjoy as it's a personal challenge for me, but even that felt like a re-badged Heaven on High.

I'm just a casual player now and have been for since Stormblood, I was happy to muddle along doing crafting or levelling jobs etc, but everything in 6.0 feels tedious, it quite frankly feels like a chore to log in.

I'm actively looking for a replacement MMO now. I know we have different feelings about games and stories, but if a lot of long time players like me are also cancelling their subs, it must surely make SE do a rethink.

Although I do understand what you are saying there is one factor often ignored in statements like this.

Other than sub time and the purchase of new expansions as they come out NEW PLAYERS make more money for the company. They stay around longer for more sub money consistently. They also have to buy the content to begin with. They don't already own half the cash shop.

Until the number of long term players leaving eclipses the number of new players coming in, long term players are not the main focus beyond "Give them just enough to make them buy the new expansion and sub for a few months here and there."

Sharing the sentiment with most others, if 7.0 keeps going to direction I dislike, I will probably become a story only player. Getting the expansions from sale and clearing most of the stuff during final patch with a single month of a sub.

Like most people I am holding out for 7.0 but if it follows where it looks like it is heading I think it is finally time after 9 years to hang this game up and move forward. 9 years of gameplay and I seen that content and the devs love for the game has dropped

What disappointment? Relic was as expected, and less grindy than in past expansions which is good. As for anything Savage, I literally couldn't care less.

There's ample proof to be found by simply daring a look at what the FFXIV tag brings up on Twitter to see exactly what a lot of players use the game for.

As for players being 'pushed out', one only needs to look at how vocal members of this community behave if someone likes or dislikes the 'wrong' character or doesn't react the 'right way' to certain cutscenes.

    You...can't be serious, can you?

    1) There are no numbers with "what the FFXIV tag brings up on Twitter". "a lot"? How many? 1? 50? 500? 1,000? 1,000,000? How is this "data"?
    2) "anecdote is not data".
    3) Can you offer evidence that the majority of FFXIV's playerbase is even on Twitter?
    4) Can you show the number of them that post on Twitter?
    5) Can you show the number posting "Second Life" on Twitter, and what percentage that is of the playerbase?
    6) Twitter, in general, represents only a small segment of society, and studies have shown that around 80-90% of posts are made by only around 2% of Twitter users to begin with. Did you know that?

    No?

Then that's not data. That's not useful to a discussion. "A few hundred" - in a game played by between 1 million and 3 million people? 100 is 0.01% of 1,000,000. 500 is 0.05%. You need 10,000 to get to even 1% of the playerbase. Can you find 10,000 individual FFXIV posters on Twitter all posting Second Life topics? I doubt you can. And even if you could, that would be at best 1% of the playerbase, hardly a majority. And that's if we lowball the playerbase at 1 million instead of 2 million or 3 million (I think around 1.7-1.8 million is the general ballpark of active player by various estimates.)

In short, you contest data with "look at Twitter".

That's like contesting serious policy debate with "Read the President's Twitter rage takes".

    .

    EDIT:

Again, I don't think the game's perfect. It's leaving a lot of potential content and players on the table by not developing more midcore content - something other MMOs have also failed at (for years, WoW was "raid scene and PvP" and nothing else). I think there's also room for both simple Jobs (like current SMN) and complex ones (like old SMN) in the same design space. Hell, old SMN had a 2 min rotations so would work with the 2 min meta system, even!

I think the solution is to change things up a bit, but keep the core, just adding to it. Cast a wider net, both to catch new fish and to give existing fish more room to swim within. I don't see anything wrong with that.

However, the notions that the game is dying or only held aloft by "Second Life" players is both insulting AND statistically invalid. The data does not support either claim.
