I don't want to beat a dead horse or start a flame war concerning this topic, but I would at least like the community team/devs to hear me out.
I had just recently come back to Final Fantasy XIV after a long break, but by no means am I a stranger to the game. I've alpha and beta tested the game as well as played for quite a while when the game came out in September of 2010, but could not find a fan base due to the demise of the immediate release. I came back to the game in January and have deactivated my character (Misfitwonder of Carbuncle) on Final Fantasy XI. It's good to be in Eorzea and I can't wait until 2.0!
However, all enthusiasm aside - I've been keeping a close eye on Vanafest 2012 this weekend, and while the thought of a new expansion and new jobs are very tempting, there's still one thing that's really holding me back from playing Final Fantasy XI again. I'm still waiting for someone on the dev panel to say "oh! we're going to be lowering the subscription of XI". TBH, as great of a game as Final Fantasy XI is, it is really hard to justify paying the $12.95 for a 10-year old game that could very well be on life support due to their players flocking to other MMORPGS, including but not limited to Final Fantasy XIV. I'm just afraid that a new expansion may not be enough to bring the XI community back, especially with members' hatred against Abyssea "ruining the game". "Seekers of Adoulin" comes out in 2013, and at the time...I have no ambition on jumping back to XI until that time arises, and even at that point will still be a consideration.
Right now, with the XIV legacy campaign, XIV currently costs less per month than XI. XIV will be a brand-new experience as well as a brand new game with the release of not only 2.0, but the imminent Playstation 3 release as well. However, as I've said before, this may be beating a dead horse, but I would like to still see some incentive for playing Final Fantasy XI in conjunction with XIV again. When I first bought the collectors edition of XIV, the original caveat of playing both games enticed me, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel that I would not be paying (at the time) over 25 dollars for both games per month, but rather 20 dollars per month (12.99+7 see: http://www.shacknews.com/article/652...final-fantasy/ ). Will an incentive like that eventually return?
Sincerely
