You’re gonna love it when Jenova finally rears her ugly head in this game…

Ironically, I have the opposite complaint about FF7, I think it's let down by Jenova not being more of an overarching force. She's way more interesting than Sephiroth, and I preferred when I thought that he was basically her meat puppet over the course of FF7 rather than him controlling her.

I do think it's kinda inevitable that Jenova will be the endpoint of the Ultima storyline, because they'd be fools to not make her the mystery alien entity. (Also, we're not passing up Soken doing a version of J-E-N-O-V-A, he is MADE to knock that one out of the park.) But I both hope she won't be behind everything, and expect she won't be; now that we're disentangled from the Ascians, we can get some stories of people on a more human scale, independent of shadowy machinations, and I kinda feel like the developers have the common sense to give us an expansion of independence from anything like that before building up another.

Mostly agreed; I played Chrono Trigger about a year or so before I first did 7. So, when I first played, I was hoping for a sort of Lovecraftian Eldritch horror mind controlling her children. Expecting to lose Cloud at some point like we lost Crono, I was expecting him to turn into a major enemy we have to beat some sense into before taking down Jenova. Heck I had thought we might also be able to get Sephoroth to join the good guys for an epic showdown…..but noooope.

Too bad, but I guess it’d have been too similar to Chrono Trigger…


I hope they do it justice eventually, but for now I dunno. Rather than world ending doom and gloom I’d really just like an Indiana Jones esque adventure with fairly small but intimate stakes.
