I always assumed the Search Item function doesn't actually ask antything to the server, but worked on cached data from the client. This is hinted at by the red question marks that says "Result may not reflect current inventory status. Open again for latest results.".
So I don't see any technical obstruction to displaying results from a non-home server.

Does ownership really matter ? So long as the resource is accessible, it's enough for me to justify including it in the search results.

Pretty much. It's not actually opening your retainers, glamour dresser, etc when you do an isearch. It's reading a list of what was there last time you looked, which in the case of your own personal inventory won't have changed. That's not true of the FC chest. They could probably add the FC chest to isearch fairly easily if they wanted to, but since it's public access there's no guarantee your search will be accurate, or even if you have permission to access the items there in the first place.
