I am baffled that the most common rebuttal appears to be "because they wanted something new!!!"
New? I'm playing as a taru with earrings. my best friend is a galka . and we started in windurst .. er... gridania, was it?

Ivalice is the world of FFXII, three tactics games, and Vagrant Story. That's enough iterations. Why can't we have a few with Vana'Diel like stuff?

Honestly there isn't much that's new to FFXIV, The races are the same as FXI, the cities, the class/job are all borrowed from the past, the mobs most are borrowed. So yes I vote for Ivalice.
If you look at FFXIV in terms of the story line there is nothing that makes you go WHOA!!!
I am talking about story line not graphic or Ifirt, moogle, gradula (u get tired of them anyway)
Every FF in the past had a WHOA effect, something different until 2.0 this one does not and I have played almost every single quest the game offers.
I am who I am. I am not someone else, nor would I ever wish to be
Everything about this game seems like it's Vana'Diel in the future for me and I'd love for them to point that out in some point.
Now the only lore explanation to why the races look so similar is: "It was cheaper to make gear and animations for these models."

Personal thing here, but I'd probably not touch an Ivalice MMO. Ivalice is done to death for me, it's got way too many games set there.
Final Fantasy Ivalice MMORTS.

SE has set every FF game in a new world. Its their tradition now, and I don't think they will change it.
It's probably for the best that no numbered FF title should ever revisit a world of a previous numbered FF title.
In fact, maybe SE should take a break from making new numbered FF games until next gen systems are out and instead work on offshoots for their existing games for a bit (like they did with FFVII, FFX, and FFXIII). It would help to build up cash reserves for their next big project.
Like an Ivalice-based casual MMO (for next gen handhelds maybe?): 'Final Fantasy Online: Ivalice'
Or a offline/semi-online (think Monster Hunter) game set in Vana'diel: 'Final Fantasy XI-2'
