What are you paying a subscription for?

I spend 12-16 dollars a month on something I hangout with my friends on, do dungeons, dress up my character, enjoy the story and interactions and have "adventures" in for maybe 5-12 hours a week.


As opposed to the near 4-6 hundred dollars keeping this husk of a body I am chained to alive with sustenance or the near 3k I spend a month keeping it safe from the elements and wildlife.


You rather I drop that on a shot of top shelf liquor over the weekend where I spent just as much to get in the building? Or Maybe for the fuel I needed to drive out and back to some fun outdoor spot?


If you spent this much effort tallying up the actual monetary cost of ALL the things you do (including whining about FF constantly), maybe you'd realize what a cheap side activity this is.

Just a genuine question to all the players out there.

You are paying ~$112 per patch (Almost triple that if you have max retainers).

For the price of a full AAA title, is the content that XIV offers you in a single patch worth its subscription cost?

Personally i would say no, its not.
I have the maximum retainers addition, and it costs me ~$350 per patch to say subscribed to XIV, that is the cost of 4 full priced AAA new release games, for what is around a month, maybe two, worth of content.
After realizing this, i can't in good faith keep throwing money at a product that isn't receiving enough attention by its developers, player numbers between major patches fluctuate to the point where the game becomes basically unplayable in places like Materia.

So what do you spend your $112+ on per patch cycle?


EDIT: Seems i was wrong here, patches are 4 months, just feels like 8.
So i guess thats still $220/patch which is still pretty bad for the content that is released.

Welll it is an MMO, there is more to it than just patches and new stuff, which count anything from player events to doing some of the current content, be it new or old.

I pay a subscription because I enjoy my time in the game. There is a lot of content I enjoy and am still enjoying levelling various jobs or systems. When that is no longer the case, I will stop. Just like every other MMO I've spent money on.

At some point every game will run it's course, either temporarily or permanently. I'm enjoying myself presently, and so I subscribe.

I have spent $60 to $100 on AAA games that I complete in 8 to 20 hours. So I feel I get value out of XIV.

Edit: It's also $52 per patch for me...so *shrug*.

Based on my average yearly playtime and sub price, only costs me $0.04 per hour. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

You are paying what, almost $90/month? How many accounts do you have? Max paid retainers is 6 + 12.99/mo. That's 24.99/mo. Not 90. That doesn't even hit $350 a year.

everything i bought online goes to the government in taxes so i pay double sub.

I sub coz i like to do roulettes and hope that one day i can max everything to 90 :P

This is an MMORPG live service game with a monthly fee
you buy the game to start out, then pay per month to keep playing.

The experiences are different and you really can not compare the two.

I would disagree, and feel what I am paying per month well justifies the content I get.

I am paying to keep my house but I am caring less and less about it. Each expansion has had less and less content, and the new uwu feelsy direction of the story isn't what the story initially grabbed me with. I do log on to play occasionally, doing stuff in the gold saucer or in Eureka/Bozja. 7.0 is going to make or break my interest in the game.

The ability to play a Videogame.
One that I enjoy. And I will continue to do so, until I no longer Find the Game Fun.
