Some of what we see in XVI makes you wonder why we can't get it in XIV. For example, solo hunts that... aren't a complete striking dummy. Combat without telegraphs in normal content. Perhaps even the combat itself. Universal voice acting (granted, they had 7 years to work on this whereas there's only 4 months for XIV). The graphics, which I know they want to scale down to PS4 for FFXIV, but still.

But a lot of things in XVI design are in the same style as XIV actually. The sidequests are pretty similar in design (some may disagree, but as someone that does the sidequests, they tell you about the life of the people in the area and how they are affected by MSQ events in XIV as well). The zones are, well, zones that have loading screens like in XIV. There are scenarios that the main story takes you into that are similar to dungeons in XIV and then there are boss battles that you can do a bit later, similar to trials in XIV. You teleport back and forth between areas and return to a home area regularly like in XIV instead of being forced to travel back and forth on foot.

Did XVI benefit XIV at all already? Yes. We see people biting apples in XVI and that technology was obviously brought over to XIV where we see the scions eating burgers and things. Also possibly the UI changes that XIV previously had such as quest display settings. Probably other things but I haven't thought about them yet.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

At what point do we use the guise of QoL to get rid of all game mechanics?

Autoplay already existed in older F2P mmos and in mobile games nowadays.

XVI gutted a lot of what we expect from FF games in general, and that alone scares me for both future FF games, and XIV. It did introduce some sick boss fights, so if we ever keep anything from CBU:III I want it to be some form of boss DDR combat.
If you ignore that those mid-sized areas are vast stretches of void devoid of activity interspersed with small towns that you can explore in half a minute, sure.

None of the big cities are explorable just like in FF13, which started the trend of the franchise locking you out of cities to save time making assets.

As for those boss fights, it's probably a matter of taste but while the underlying base combat can be fun the boss fights are all spectacle and none of them give you a feeling of mastery unlike in Souls/Sekiro or the GoW Valkyries/berserkers, where by the time you win you truly feel like you earned it.

If this is the best CBU3 can do I'd rather they pivot to making TV shows.

I really hope not. Hopefully someone at CBU III eventually starts listening to player feedback.
It will continue to be a dream for the distant future. FF16 level graphics are not mmo friendly and would work against it more then for it. MMO seek to be accessible to as many players as possible. Graphics like FF16 would restrict how many can actually play the game. One of FF16s cut scenes in graphics mode has reported caused ps5s to overheat. Just think what a hunt with 50 players and FF16 level graphics would do..

I'd say they should have learned their lesson on that with FF14 1.0. The game was so overtuned it was eating the hardware of anything running it that wasn't a top tier gaming PC at the time. ARR actually scaled the graphics back.

There were a lot of contributing factors to the laggy feeling of 1.0. I bought it on launch day and could play it on my laptop on medium graphics 30 FPS. It was a 1K Dell XPS 1645. The problem was that the menus rendered server side, so you know that awful ping we have in this game? well... Apply it to most menus in game and all of a sudden it will take you 3 seconds to even open up your character profile.

Not saying it wasn't a heavy game but the truth is a lot more convoluted than just high graphics. It was a gorgeous game however.

I feel FFXVI could have easily been a 10/10 game if they adopted an open world design, Witcher 3 levels of side quests and world depth and a decent gearing/attribute system instead of full on auto pilot. Really those were the elements that I missed the most. The rest was great to me.

I can only imagine they didn't do that because of the testing and Q&A + balancing work it would entail, which I don't blame them but.... You're not going to get 10/10 if you are not going to go the extra mile.
I seriously doubt they can pull a Witcher 3 type game off.

But FF16 is horribly balanced anyways. FF mode is about as easy as normal mode and exploration gives you crap that you aren't going to use and the only reason why finding treasure chests would even be worth it is for gil bugs and gil to complete the orchestrion roll (though even that seems pointless when quests just shower you in gil).

Also there's a reason people say Benedikta is a hard fight (it really isn't because you can just ungabunga and R1 your way out of everything) and it's because you only have one eikon at that time.

The moment you have three, you have enough CC that normal enemies even the minibosses are completely irrelevant. You are able to pretty much cycle primal attacks non-stop (saving them for stagger phase is a huge DPS loss btw) and just eat some damage to keep uptime because the boss will die sooner than it can deplete more than a single hi-potion. And once you get Titan it's gg really, just counter and keep uptime. It's really ridiculous and idk who made this system.

Might as well make FF14 and FF16 autoplay so I can eat dinner while watching the character run to point X for 20 seconds and watch another 8-minute cutscene or some shit

I think FFxvi is gonna lead cbu3 into making their next mainline FF game an action mmo tbh . If what I see in Chrono Odyssey is what gaming might progress to w/ Gfx and scale in the future I have no reason not to think this might be the direction they'll be going with . I actually won't mind it as FFxvi is almost the same a DC Universe Online , you could use like 10 different weapon types which all had unique action combos while you could choose 6 abilities that were on cds from multiple skill trees. It was actually some of the most fun I've every had especially as far as pvp is concerned .
