This is true, but one would expect that a Final Fantasy MMO should be a conglomeration of ideas from previous Final Fantasy titles, along with new ones, being a non-linear massive world. Just like XI was, just like this game is shaping up to be.
1 thing I can honestly say is that its a fantasy game. Fantasy can be anything it wants to be. One person's idea of a fantasy may differ from others ideas.
I always liked the way each FF was different.![]()
In MMO terms I think the armoury system is, at its core, a good way of controlling alt-itis, since your alt is still the same character and there's no need to relog or do complicated trading to pass items from your main to your alt. In Final Fantasy single-player, you control a party, and all your 'alts' (as it were) are in the same party, while in Final Fantasy MMOs, you only control a single character, so there's no room for other party members (or your party members are real people, so you don't get to play as them).
This means that FFSP has this mix of central, internal interaction (where you have 'embodied' control of the primary character) and acentral, external interaction (where you're managing multiple characters). The nature of that relationship between internal and external changed from game to game (XII and XIII placed a lot more weight on the 'internal' mode than the previous games did, for example, while some of the early games didn't make a big deal about any 'central' character at all), but that relationship always existed.
FFMMO, on the other hand, is, almost necessarily, strictly internal interaction, which is a difference, but the armoury system seems like a way of addressing that difference to bring it more in line with the Final Fantasy series.
(Sorry if I made that too complicated. I'm told I'm not very good at explaining things clearly.)

OP, a hallmark of the FF series is that although jobs fill similar roles, the job/class system itself is ALWAYS different. As such, this game fits the mold perfectly.
Maybe it would be cool to have just one basic class which can use some abilities of different jobs. Like we had with freelancer (?). Then let the job stone system be as it is but let them use different types of weps.

your moms not a real final fantasy!

Can't say I really enjoy the classes myself. They have their uses but outside of the rare occasion, i'll never be using them anymore.

I gotta say that I like FFXI's system better where jobs can use different weapons, but I'm dealing with FFXIV's.
