Crashing upon loading into the world

TLDR; Loading into the game on a character immediately results in the game crashing to desktop, sometimes accompanied by an error message reading "an unexpected error has occurred."

I'm on hour eight of trying to get my game to work so apologies in advance if this is a little messy, it's almost four in the morning and I'm exhausted. For context, I own the game through Steam and haven't had any major problems before. I've always had both it and Steam installed on an external SSD which has worked fine. Here's a full rundown of the issues I've been having:

Starting last night, I was unable to log back into the game after logging out. The launcher listed the error message "Unable to retrieve steam account information. There was no response from the Steam network. Please wait and try again later." I tried a number of things culminating in attempting to reinstall the game only to get the same error. Eventually, I realized the issue was with my installation of Steam itself and reinstalled that, copying and then pasting back my steamapps folder so as not to lose the games I had installed.

After this, my current problems began. The error message in the launcher is gone and I can start the game perfectly fine, but the second I try and load into a character the game crashes. Most of the time it crashes without an error message, but when I try to make a new character I get this.

I have tried everything I can think of and everything I've been able to find through google and looking at other people's posts with similar issues.

A list of what I've tried:

- Restarting my computer.
- Starting the game windowed, borderless windowed, and fullscreen.
- Resetting system settings from the launcher.
- Restoring game data from the launcher.
- Running the game as an administrator.
- Manually checking and updating graphics card drivers.
- Deleting the FF14 folder in "My Games".
- Using the "Restore Game Data" option in the launcher.
- Fully deleting everything, uninstalling the launcher through Steam, and then reinstalling the launcher and the game.

After as fresh of an install as I could make it, the problem of crashing upon loading in with my existing character persisted though I was temporarily able to make a new character. Upon loading in with that character though, things were... weird. Specifically, the minimap was gone and the map could not be opened. I could talk to npcs and get quests, but it seemed as though additional hud elements would not appear. I could open the escape menu, but trying to select any options within it would make a sound as though I had opened them but nothing would appear on the screen. I thought that maybe they were just invisible but trying to navigate with either the keyboard or mouse did not work. The final thing I noticed before force closing the game (couldn't log out through the escape menu haha) was that, when using the city aetherytes, I could see a portion of the map, though sections of it seemed to be missing, replaced with just a black shape.

With all that behind me, I tried the "Restore Game Data" option again, which led to my current situation with the game still crashing and now unable to even make a new character. I'm at my wits end, I have no idea what else to try, and any help would be hugely appreciated.

We would like to assist with your concern. Please try the following to see if they help:
- Try switching to DirectX 9 or DirectX 11 (if possible) by selecting the ‘Config’ button on the launcher.
- Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and sound drivers (if applicable).
- Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything.
- Please be sure that Final Fantasy XIV AND Steam are installed to the same drive. Having both installed on the C: Drive can help with this issue.
- Please be sure to disable or remove any overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA etc.) as they may interfere with startup.
- Make sure that the Windows OS is fully updated.
- Reinstall game once more. (As you are playing steam version, try uninstalling and reinstalling both the game and steam)
- Verify installation files.
