Their example should also make it painfully obvious why this has been abandoned in FFXIV. It was a system that just made unnecessary awkward situations at best, or rude interactions at worst. Entirely unnecessary.
why is this even a problem? it's virtual gear on a virtual character? i too inspect people if i like their glam to see what it is.

why do u even have to inspect random players?? Just check their parse numbers, if its not ~99th average - blacklist and move on.
No-one blacklists that strictly. Iirc anything past 80% is already drifting into critical variance anyway on most fights. (I.E. "Did you highest potency abilities get a Direct Critical under buffs? Y/N/F)
Most groups don't give a fig about parsing past "have you cleared" outside of ultimate. Anyone who is hitting greens-blues is both consistent and above average. Anyone higher is genuinely good at the game.
Gear also plays a huge factor.
This was a problem in ffxi they learned
