I'm not sure which timeline we're in now, but I agree.

Reddit relies on these 'tiny number of moderators' to do all their work for them, and are now looking to go public. Do you suppose those mods will get any of the profits? No, reddit will try to act like the good guy here, when they're simply trying to make money off the service of these small number of users that keep reddit working. Those 3rd party applications also include admin/mod tools that help them do their job. Does anyone want to see reddit have no moderation and become 4chan? I don't, and I barely use reddit for ffxiv stuff.

I don’t view it that way personally. My understanding is that mods are volunteers who are just really passionate about the topic of the su they are in. What they get out of it is having a community for a hobby they enjoy. I haven’t seen any wanting such a role to get paid. I see people in various subs wanting to be mods all the time, and mods leaving the role when it no longer interests them. They also have no real standards of activity or level of involvement, unlike paid roles.
