As climate change, war, and social upheaval displace hundreds of millions of people every year, the West needs to take responsibility for helping these migrants and refugees, because it is simply the right thing to do. Unfortunately, today too many people are xenophobic and don't want to accept refugees and migrants into their country, often based on racist and stereotypical beliefs.
So the fact that this game took a stand and showcased a world that pushes us to empathize with the refugees is a bold statement from CBU3 and Square Enix. The Ala Mhigans have suffered immensely under Garlean rule and were displaced and have to live for scraps as they came to Ul'dah. They are blocked by a literal giant Wall (which a certain orange-faced president with tiny hands wanted to build). No doubt, CBU3 saw the rhetoric around the Wall and decided to parody it as a statement against hate on refugees and migrants in the form of Ul'dah. Inside Ul'dah, the rich folks couldn't care less about the rights of migrants, and the oligopolistic government, controlled by the Syndicate, actively works against the rights of the migrants. Hmmm.. sounds like AmeriKKa. The people inside Ul'dah also pretend that these migrants don't exist and avoid them as possible. There are even insinuations made by Ul'dahns about how the Ala Mhigan refugees are violent and aggressive... Sounds suspiciously similar to how certain Europeans describe Syrians, hmm?
The story forces us to be uncomfortable. Even now there is no proper resolution to the refugee story after Ala Mhigo was liberated. Yes, someone will decry that FF14 shouldn't contain real world themes, but I appreciate CBU3 for writing a story about refugees because it IS an important issue and all forms of media should challenge the reader, viewer, or player to think about these real world issues. I hope that by playing FF14, at least a few people's minds changed on how they treat refugees and migrants, because at this juncture in history we should empathize with the plight of migrants as it could be any of us in the future.
