It actually took almost 3 years for them to finish the WoTG story. WoTG was released around 11/20/2007 and the update that contained the mission "finale" was released around 11/2010.As a former XI player i can't say this has me too interested. While new expansions are always exciting, IMO Treasures of Aht Urghan was the last GOOD expansion. Wings of The Goddess was a Boxed expansion with Campaign on it. That was it for like 6 months, even then it took over a year to get the story out.
I play Dragoon in XIV, and I actually really like the positional aspects of the combo system. (I also think they will work much better if the servers become more responsive in 2.0.)
With that said, I can think of two reasons why a positional mage might not be fun to play.
1) As a ranged class, the arc that you have to move in to change positions is much larger. Circling a mob would take a much longer time, and if the mob changes directions a lot, you wouldn't be able to keep up.
2) Casting spells takes a lot longer than triggering a weaponskill. Again, if the mob changes direction as you casting bar fills, you're out of luck.
I'm not arguing that Geomancer won't be fun, as we know way too little about the job at this point to know one way or the other. I'm sure there are a lot of creative things they could do with it. However, there are some design hurdles that would need to be overcome in order to make a positional mage fun to play.

I always thought of a trailer as of something that is supposed to make you want to play the game. This trailer just had a few art drawings, a bunch of empty words and a person running through some empty zones. Zones that seemed so old, that even at start of FFXI, it would have seemed outdated.Very true...theu could show a lot there...they could show anything...but they prefered not showing a thing. :/
I guess they think 2 artworks from Yoshitaka Amano are more appealing than gameplay... ; ;
Luckly we have more Vanafest tonight for the extra info the trailer never had! ^^
If the new FFXIV trailer is like that too, it would be a poor start of FFXIV 2.0

Completely agree. IMO this trailer was meaningless. If was to release just it, they should leave only the VanaFest info.I always thought of a trailer as of something that is supposed to make you want to play the game. Hopefully next one will actually show some actual gameplay! ^^ And hopefully next one will come out tonight lol
I find that ironic after people on both forums told SE to release even concept videos of in development stuff. Considering they added the files on test server..1 maybe 2 weeks ago? It's clear they're only in conceptual stage and wanted to show that there will be an expansion xD
As much as I loved FFXI (and Geomancer too), I don't think I'll go back. I never even reached lvl 75 after years of playing it, because I was too casual. FFXIV is way more forgiving in that aspect, so I'll stay where I am.
It's intriguing. I'll probably resub to explore the new lands but I don't think I'll be captivated any more.
Geomancer is cool though, really surprised they managed to make that job uniquely different.
Well, FF11 is more casual friendly now than it has ever been. Leveling up and meriting is effortless, you can get "decent" gear with just 2-3 people joining you. Don't even have to grind for money anymore, cause there is so much easily available r/e gear, and leveling is too casual for people to even care about your gear being 20 levels too low.
Rune Fencer, the 2nd new FFXI job.
Wonder if it's all a psyche, I mean they did promise us Judgemaster back when A Shanotto Ascension Episode came out about 3-4 years ago. Then again they also said it would divulge into the true Mitheran homeland with that episode and that was nothing but disappointment, just watch they'll turn around and say PS2 limitations and just rehash more zones or something.
