It wasn't abyssea it was the level cap rasie, stuff that was current at level 75 will get way easier at 99. It happens in every mmo that gets a level cap raise. I thought Abyssea is the best thing to happen to FFXI it gave you a ton of new gear to get and a lot of stuff to work for. Finally I could get gear that was an actual upgrade and not a side grade. You could do it at our own pace and it didn't take a ton of people to do. Was doing tons of abyssea even today finish off some af3 sets, still pretty fun to do even now.

    Ditto for me.
That's my guess. Templer, there was very few magic sword user jobs in FF history but this one seems to fit.

Meh, I'd troll their forums and bring back the RDM melee thread if I was still signed up. I'm happy for the people who wanted Geomancer, though. Lord knows how long they've been waiting for that one.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

Not really, since Vana'diel has lore to back up directions being important, tying them to elements and summons and stars and whatnot. Lore that the job is probably going to be grounded in.

In Eorzea we can't even keep our elemental wheel in order, fuck it, east may as well be southwest.

This. FFXI was one of the best gaming experience in my life, but it's been a totally closed chapter to me since early 2010 or so. Need to look ahead. Go Yoshi and 2.0!

If they had brought out a full expansion like this instead of that abomination that was Abbysea I would most likely still be playing. It's like your former lover getting on with their life without you. You'll always wonder how they are getting on even if they aren't the one for you anymore.

Same. I will probably buy the box just so I can sit it next to my other boxes. I have a few friends who still play FFXI so it is cool to see they are getting some new content and not just revamped old content.

Not to mention going by cardinal direction is very lame and not exactly useful in quicker combat like what XIV has. Playing on the theme of the elements would be cool, as would utility granted by Geomancy that would be on par or variations of what can be achieved with White and Black magic.

Wow... I think I agree with every word of this.

Level cap being raised and abyssea being released ruined FFXI for me. I may go back and try out the expansion, but I find myself less interested in Geomancer than when I originally saw/played it in older FF's. Mostly, though, I just never liked the idea of all the gear I worked for through various events at 75 cap being replaced with 76-99 drops from the farmfest that is Abyssea. I hear they added some more stuff, but each iteration only replaces the last it seems nowadays. Pre-Abyssea all events had gear that was useful to someone, and BiS for something. Now, in most cases, BiS items are from whatever the latest event is. I just don't find years of events I thought fun, and gear I always liked being replaced by a few mini-expansions and useless level cap increases (whats the point of an increase when you make leveling itself too easy).

Just a few of the reasons why an FFXI expansion doesn't interest me as much as 2.0 launch. FFXIV is new, and even if they start increasing level cap it wouldn't feel as much of a slap in the face as it seemed in FFXI.
