I'd call that more a problem from forum design than lazy moderators. Many forums will auto-lock topics after a certain period of time, with the mods given the ability to unlock a topic if they feel it is relevant and helpful to do so.
Even if some of the necros have current relevance, they've rarely been helpful.
Too much display of control and censorship could deter constructive discussion.
There's almost nothing that will deter a determined troll though. Even when forum privileges are revoked, they seem to come up with yet another account to post from.
Ignoring the trolls is the best way to go. If people didn't engage with them, they would eventually go elsewhere to find the attention they crave.
I've a feeling they only act if an unknown number of reports happen. Like if 20 people reported this comment im making now...would it be removed by some auto-mod?
They do moderate this place, but how strictly is a different subject entirely.
Oft' times they're too lenient anyway, but I am pretty sure that for a lot of people whether they get banned or not on here is... Inconsequential, because I am pretty sure bans on here are only bans on here and not tied to any other service, e.g., the game itself.
Mostly I think it's that they can't really do much. And if they posted their own thoughts or opinions people would treat it like a dev response which would only cause problems. So all they could do is basic moderation/janitorial work cleaning up all the garbage, which probably also isn't that worthwhile since there's guaranteed to be just as much garbage here tomorrow either way.
+1 to actual forum infrastructure to fix it; a lot of stuff that is pretty common in more well-maintained forums:
-Auto lock after 2 weeks of inactivity
-outside of tech support/help, new members can only respond to existing threads until some number of posts to unlock new thread
-certain in-game requirements (this one has the “must have played within the last 15 days”, but I’ve seen some requiring an amount of playtime or level or reach a certain point in the game)
-Use of respected/vetted player-mods to moderate for free (has good and bad points)…
not necessarily all good, but it is surprising not to see more..I dunno… something on this board.
That would be a restrictively short timeframe for any real long-standing discussion.
A functioning moderator would have the power to manually lock threads that are repeatedly bumped for drama-garnering purposes, which would solve a great deal of the cyclical bumping here, as it's always a pattern of the same threads bumped en masse by the same pattern of posters.
I've spent a lot of time on well and actively moderated forums in the past, so seeing just how laissez faire the moderation on this forum is was kinda shocking.
So far as I can see, they'll only intervene for blatantly, un-ignorable rule breaking behaviour, or if they have to deal with a report.
Otherwise, it's anything goes.
Last I checked but all the community representatives were off busy representing their own interests in the game.
Forums are not taken care of well enough. A lot of lazy trolling and necroing along with the lack of moderation of anything but the most extreme behavior made me decide to limit my time here again.
In that regard nothings changed from the other times I’ve been here except it seems even worse than before now as far as the amount of mean-spirited posts.
