Servers are not so much the issue anymore, the main problem is cross server bandwidth and latency. The more goodies they add (clothes, customizations, dyes, etc.), the more bandwidth they need and as you can only slap so many fiber channel cards into a server, there is the true server limitations.
And all comes down to the engine being a hot mess. Either they are using the "server bandwith" as an excuse cause they cant find a way to add more customization without breaking the game, or the engine is so bad that adding more customization ddos' their own servers. Or, an that could be equally true, dont want to spend ressources on that cause people will eat up their excuses anyway. It shouldnt make a difference if there are 100 or 500 hairs because on the serverside the characterdata should just point to an ID and the client loads the hair with the ID. ANd for a database it doesnt matter if the hairfield says 100 or 325
