Currently, many players are inundated with lots of materia (from spiritbonding) that they have no use for, and that there is no market demand for (e.g. Water Veil, Chocobo Down).
I propose that an NPC be introduced into the game that can "rescramble" materia into a new random materia. Initially, I was thinking of a system such as the following (I'm not married to the exact values):
- trade in 2 tier I materia for a random tier II
- trade in 3 tier II materia for a random tier III
- trade in 4 tier III or tier IV materia for a random tier IV
This system would accomplish three things, I believe:
1) allow (and encourage) players to empty their retainer inventory of stockpiled marginal materia
2) give players something to do with unwanted materia besides NPCing them for pennies
3) create an extra sense of excitement from the chance of rolling a more desirable type of materia (as opposed to the monotony of simply NPCing unwanted materia)
I realize that there can be some concern about shortages of desirable materia due to rescrambling. While you can tweak the exact ratios of materia exchange to combat this, I don't see it as a big concern; financially, if you are currently holding a tier III that has a substantial market value, it doesn't make sense to destroy it (along with 3 other tier IIIs) for a low percentage chance at a desirable tier IV.
I welcome any input on this suggestion.
