Blue Magic - Training Dummies, Preview Spells & Training "

So, dusting off Blue Magic and I was looking at the basics. Can anyone explain why I can't use 95% of spells against the training dummy?

Without having to go through Multiple steps of "Setting Spells", wouldn't a nice quick "Preview Spells" animation be nice?

Also, I wouldn't mind a sub-menu function to train on spell use with a quit like in some games that lets you practice when you buy it or earn it?
