The french description of this item is very different from US :

FR: "Sa valeur nominale n'est que d'un gil, mais certains amateurs d'objets sonnants et trébuchants semblent l'apprécier."
EN translation: "Its nominal value is only a gil, but some fans of hard cash items seem to enjoy it."

IMO it's just to promote the black market for those who didn't know it already.

My guess is the black market will play a bigger role in 2.0 and selling the coin is the first step in opening up a future quest-line.

I know this is kind of a necro bump but I didn't see any posts pointing this out:

I think the relevance of the "guaranteed never to depreciate in value!" comment stems from the fact that it's a 1-gil coin and there isn't anything that's worth less than 1 gil. Therefore, its value can't go any lower.

It's a nice way to hold more than 50k seals at once, so keep that in mind. Unless you want to spend the seals immediately, there's no reason to cash in the coin because of the limit of seals you can hold.

I'm still holding out hope that there's going to be some kind of "GOTCHA" later on where the company rewards your not hawking your memorabilia on the black market ... maybe the final promotion would just be free, but people who traded it in would have to farm seals to score points back with the leadership.

I'd also still love to hang that bad boy in my moghouse somewhere - maybe after I pass the "GOTCHA" check.

In the meantime, I'll have to settle with doing Reika style coin-checks at the company pub.
