I was a PLD for all of 2.0 and 3.0, and parts of 4.0 and 5.0.
PLD never felt better than during 2.0, imo. That's when damage incoming felt best. I had CD rotations for every savage fight, it took skill to stay alive.

Then they got turned into glorified dps and now healers. It's no longer a tank role, and it bores me.

This game has turned tanks into healers far more than was ever necessary.
It feels like you're upset over tanks having self sustain, which if you look at Warrior has been a thing for a while. It's not always been a thing on PLD, PLD was more known for it's lack of sustain before endwalker.

Removing sustain from tanks wouldn't really fix Healer design, Sustain and Support has been apart of tanking for a long time, You could possibly limit it but "nerfing it into the ground?" seems a bit strong and just feels like you're actually taking away more from tanks then they deserve, I mean you don't have any sort of proper aggro management or boss positioning, I don't really want to see Tanks turned into glorified DPS. It's highly unlikely they will go back on aggro management aswell.

Again it's not impossible to make healing more enjoyable without butchering tanks sustain to the point where the healer is the only person who's in charge of your selfhealing/sustain, I actually like having some self healing tools as a Tank it's fun for me and a lot of people who play tank currently.

I don't think having a single target self sustain and some GCD attacks that sustain you is too much self healing, Warrior maybe? but even then warrior tends to lack more mitigation and has generally been about sustaining themselves.

I don't think every tank should have the same or massive amounts of sustain, it's nice to have variety and differences, this is why in general Dark Knight is fine defensively actually it's the most tanky tank despite lacking any sustain So It really doesn't feel like sustain is actually the issue.
