My impression of English Forum

Greetings, everyone.
My name is Nox "NiceNox" Noverus. My main data center is Elemental, and my homeworld is Kujata. For quite sometimes, Final Fantasy XIV has not only been my 3rd home, but also my respite, inspiration, and motivation in many aspects of my life. The in-game community has been so nice and comfortable, with many memorable moments and occasions that I still remember it well like it has just happened yesterday.

I began to snoop around the English community forum during the Lalafell's Chair drama out of both curiosity and interest. At first, I thought it was just a silly and funny occasion, something that can be quite funny to look at once in a while, however, the more I looked into the English Forum, the more my curiosity turned into sadness, and interest into horror; the amount of hatred toward not only other players, but also the game and developers themselves are very scary to see, for, in my 20 years of gaming, I'd never seen such a hatred from the community that "loves" the game before. What I saw were not constructive criticisms, but abuses, guilt-tripping, gaslighting, and hatred towards not only the players but the people behind the game and the game itself, calling and labelling them with something they are not, strawmaning their statements and actions, as well as various forms of fallacies, as well.

I love looking at the criticism for it gives me the wider world to see and understand, but what I've seen here are not criticism but a "My way or No way" type of comments; it's "either they do what I want, or I am going to label them and those who disagree with me with something bad". The respect toward the game and people behind it is also something that I've yet seen in this forum, it's okay to criticize with respect and appreciation, but what I've seen so far are coercions and manipulation, ex. "There are not a lot of fat characters! The devs must be fatphobic!" and so on.

I love FFXIV, it has saved me and my life before, when the endwalker came out, I played it straight for nearly 45 hours before ending the expansion with hope, dream, and tears. To see the community of the game I love devolving into a self-hating and toxic-spewing is not only sad, but also disappointing. I hope that at least the devs can get some laughs from looking at the English Community, for if I was them, I would be sad to see my hopeful craft turned into something I didn't wish to see.

You have the right of it, and it is, indeed, quite sad. My way of looking at it is that forums tend to attract the most unhappy people, for MOST of the happy people are playing the game and enjoying it, with MOST of the people on the forums being the unhappy ones. It's pretty stark even when compared to different areas. Like the Healer forum here is very toxic and everyone seems to hate Healers and gameplay, but then you ask around Reddit and see that there are a good deal of people that like them alongside those that don't but they all can be mostly respectful and get along, and you go to some YouTube comments on FFXIV creator videos and a lot of people are saying all views and getting along, too.

These forums are somehow the most concentrated of the toxic ones, even if there are some good people here just trying to have enjoyable conversations about the game or offer legitimate criticisms.

Then you get stuff like this which outright proves the point. And there's always some people liking those toxic posts.

It's really sad. But all we can do is try to be the lighter voices in the darkness and pray that the moderators someday hear.

I don't think that's quite fair. There are a lot of good people in the English communities and a lot of non-English communities that are even worse. The Japanese community can be downright vicious when they choose to be, even going so far as to not only get people to delete their characters but to find out who they are in real life and continue hounding them.

It's like the world's going mad. Maybe it always was and the internet just exposes it more since we can all see what once might have only happened in a small backwater community somewhere that we'd never see (while we'd encounter only the cases in our own backwater), though I think the semi-anonymity of the internet likely does contribute some.

In either case, it is a worrying trend for the future, and one that needs to be opposed with reason and level headed counterpoint.

You're probably just another sockpuppet, but if you would have bothered to even glance at the post following mine, you'd see that the quoted original post used rather small font. The OP deciding to maliciously comply should remove any reason to believe that they're posting in good faith frankly.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for pointing out the small size of the original post, I do value your and everyone opinions, and if the request is about the accessibility and comfortability regarding my post without the alteration of my message, I will genuinely comply and improve for both the better communication as well as the readability of the message.

Secondly, as I stated previously in this thread, the original post is my genuine experience and impression of the English Forum, my experience and mine alone. I would like to remind everyone that I am just but a one individual, with his own opinion, experience, and understanding. I don't, will not, and can't represent the Elemental Players as a whole for I am not the native Japanese, the home world of Kujata has many Southeast Asian players and English speaking communities, thus my choice of my data center and homeworld.

I do not wish for my message and post to be seen as a form of JP chauvinism for that's not my intention, and thus I would like to apologize anyone who feels offended by my message. I will make sure for my future posts and replies to be more carefully worded.

But what you said its absolutely truth! ill follow you! Many players here dont have idea how mutch preasure japanese enployees take to make such a great game, an MMO, that has been on for 10 years! if this is not a sucees, i dont know what it is!

Agreements or disagreements, heated discussions or not, Im still happy to have met you all, to hell with what outsiders think, if you’re passionate about something just let it out, we may or may not fight about it but I wouldn’t change that for any other sub-forum here because neither is better than the other, at least here we accept how messed up we all are, we fight and make up :3

I legitimately do not know how you can think this. Tribalism and the perpetual amount of absolute adoration/disdain people have for each other in and for FFXIV is kinda exhausting.

I think it's a mix of both of these perspectives for me.

I'd like to think I've met more people I've liked than disliked through the forums, and even if someone rubs me the wrong way, it's typically contained to that thread. If we run into each other in another thread, there's generally no hard feelings from the last one. However, I do have to also half-agree with Odinel that some people and some topics on the forums are simply tiring to interact with, although I wouldn't say it's 100% due to tribalism. Whenever I see the words 'Titanman alt" thrown around, my eyes just glaze over. The same goes for certain posters. I'll refrain from naming any particular names here, but there are definitely a few posters on the forums who have given me enough reasons to not be interested in making up with up them, and quite frankly I don't care whether those particular posters feel the same about me. Certain people have proven themselves to be not worth it. Thankfully that's not the majority of the people here so we can usually all have a (relatively for the forums lol) civil discussion.
