My original point was that no one remembers or recognizes the FFXI characters hardly at all outside of people who played FFXI, and they have no cultural impact at all on the FF community as a whole so them not being recognized here tracks.

Lion was extremely generic. Prishe and Aphmau were good, but they just existed in pockets of the overall story. Prishe got more involvement later on because the players liked her and Iroha was a major link between the player character and the story, but neither were pushed by the game to the extent I think it needed to have a true breakout representation character.

There was no consistency in FFXI and our character just sat there picking their nose while running errands for a rotating cast of important people/“pretty girl of the expansion” with varying levels of characterization or personality traits that in a lot of cases, especially for ones who weren’t the poster girl, felt like they were little more than just the writer talking to themselves. So to see our WoL have importance central to the story, especially in ShB and EW, was a breath of fresh air and having established side characters grounded everything.

Rhapsodies was just 1 bit of update content. Iroha wasn’t there for the whole game and just showed up for the last act. She was important where she was and I mentioned that before, but she wasn’t with our character consistently through multiple expansions/add-ons of the game, helping to bridge everything into a more cohesive story.

Things still worked since that was the model they went for with that game and it’s not necessarily a bad one, but I still think that it didn’t let players to invest themselves in the side-characters as much as FFXIV lets us with the Scions.

I still don’t think Shantotto is as recognizable as other FF characters to the casual FF fan either. Part of that could be FFXI not being as popular as other FF games and part of it could also be the fact that she started out as just a quirky Windurst/BLM story character who wasn’t even important enough to get her own unique model or clothes.

She did get an add-on and crossover content because of her in-game popularity, but she doesn’t have nearly the same impact to her game’s story as the Scions or even FFXI’s “girl of the expansion” and even if outsiders to the game could name her, I don’t think they’d be able to say anything about her.


I get that each game takes a different approach and each have their own problems with the approach taken. But my point was that FFXI went down the other road and it’s not necessarily a better one.

The Scions have gotten a little stale and if you didn’t like them in ARR, you might not like them 10 years down the road.

But FFXI had no consistent cast that carried over between stories so if you liked one character, you can enjoy them while they last but you might not ever see them again with any real impact to the story. The closest thing to a “main character” could be Aldo since he’s in the opening cinematic, but he just has a handful of scenes throughout the game whenever you need to deal with the Tenshodo or his adopted sister.

This is art from Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, which is a turn based RPG set in the Dissidia (FF fighting game crossover) world. You can play it on smartphones, and is a pretty strong single player game (with a gacha, of course). Girl with the purple hair is Prishe, a main character from the Chains of Promathia expansion of FFXI.
