I personally really like Zero. Its nice to have another front-line female character, and I really like her style. Would an actual monster-like Zero be cool? Sure! However, I can see why they didn’t. They want to emphasise her human aspect, both in regard to her growing character arc and the fact she is literally a hybrid of the two. Plus Its much easier for a human-looking Voidsent to walk around the Source without strinking fear into everyone hearts, especially as people are still recovering from the Blasphemies which can be mistaken for Voidsent.

I think if they wanted to 'pander at all costs to the LGBT' they would actually add a openly LGBTQ main cast member. If this is pandering, then it is perhaps the lazest attempt I have seen. Androgyny is nothing new to JRPGs and FF in genrale anyway.
