I agree with OP. Belt and zipper memes work on standalone characters from the mainline series because they just wear the same shit and rarely change it or have to care about mixing and matching, but OP's own post demonstrates how the harsh belt divisions create tension when you try to mix different sets.
Probably the oddest thing was despite the belt fetishism, the actual belt accessories (when we had them) didn't even show.

They actually displayed belts in 1.0 so you could actually mix match belts with sets. That was actually cool when I tried 1.0 back then. I think the consensus would be different they retained the models because they could simply add a emperors belt lol.

They kneejerk removed alot of stuff that was actually good in 1.0. Animations were alot better, gear was made with races in mind. Lighting was alot better. WHM/BLM had different drawn weapon poses depending if they used a wand or staff which is why they WHM drawn looks so bad now, they took the one-handed drawn pose from 1.0 and removed the two-handed pose despite them making WHM/BLM one-handed weapons non-existant past ARR.

I definitely agree. they did remove alot things that were quite good. But I do believe Yoshi did say during the very first announcement of the gfx update they are working on 1) readding the shaders they had removed from 1.0 and 2) readding and making the light sources better. I still remember our characters having physics when coming to a stop after sprinting lol.

The cause of alot of graphic reduction was that 1.0 was basically roasting any hardware that wasn't a high end gaming PC at the time. Granted it wasn't as bad as Crysis or Cyberpunk 2077 lol
