To be honest as much as i like most of the scions, quite a few of them overstayed their welcome.
I can say that most if not all of the scions reached a point where their character arc is over and not much character development can be done anymore after Endwalker.
For example Urianger, Thancred, the twins and Estinien is all but done.
Y'shtola still has some potential but imo she is just kept around forever for fanservice.
The ending was a perfect opportunity to get rid of them at least for a while to make a glorious return 1 or 2 expansions later for memberberries.
It feels like the devs know that at some point they have to retire them and they are preparing for it for a while now but holy hell they need to pull the trigger already.
As an example for replacement, i am 100% convinced that Ryne is at some point going to take Thancreds place as the tank. When she "inherited" his gunblade and even used it in Eden once, that was pretty much a confirmation. I would be very happy with her and Gaia as members of our group of misfits exploring other shards and saving worlds. I would like Mikoto as well.
What rot, everyone knows each Warrior of Light has their own separate dimension filled with their own separate Estinien. That comes from the Estinien Dimension. An eldritch demiplane chock-full of meandering, mindless Estiniens that wander till it's their time to be summoned to yet another new Warrior of Light's Source.
It's really sad that from what we know about DT, we're just going to see the same old Scions again.
Why exactly are Alphinaud and Alisaie joining us? They've completed their character arcs. They've grown from pompous nepo children with manservants attending their every wishes to getting a humble pie and growing to become seasoned diplomats in their own rights. They could've found new meaning in becoming ambassadors to Garlemald from Sharlayan. Instead they tag along?
What even are Thancred and Urianger's motivations nowadays? Thancred has long since completed his arc in 5.0, in Shadowbringers. Urianger loafed about with the Lopporits and got much needed closure at the tail-end of 6.0 with the touching reunion, and completed his arc too. Why do we have two guys with nothing more to develop joining us?
Three quarters of the protagonists in this expansion have no room to expand as characters, not unless they want to massively retcon their personalities. What is the point of including them?
I was hoping EW would be the last we see of those characters... Knowing they're joining us for DT as well is just too much - they have outstayed their welcome and I was praying for them to get replaced by a new group :\
Square Enix have extorted money from Viera and Hrothgar's limitations, but from the outside looking in it seems barely any of that money is invested back into the limited races. How much money have they made from players
fantasia'ing to and from the limited races? We want more race-exclusive hair.
We want them improved, and we want it done within a reasonable time.
This got a chuckle out of me, but it's true... The Scions are hypercompetent, and this many years in, it's really becomes rather dull.I differ here. I don't give a crap about "species representation". Who cares if we have some Viera traipsing along after us? I can tell you right now said Viera is going to be a tea-sipping academic aetherologist prepared for senate floor debates on water crystals and their effect on seabass biochemistry.
I would like more scrubby characters to go on adventures with us. I want ugly, flawed perspectives on story events, I want dissent in the party. I understand that the latter is something we will see in DT, but it honestly feels like it'll be sanitized by the whole affair being a contest. I hope I'm wrong, but "we got hired by the other side so we're opponents, I guess" is just [to me] not as compelling writing as people fundamentally disagreeing on something and it causing some actual friction between the parties involved.
Sorry, kinda went on a tangent there. More on topic, I really do wish we formed a new group going forward. I've seen some people say they don't want their beloved Scions to go. They want to keep on going on adventures with their blorbos... Look, I get that it's cute seeing G'raha eat a taco or engage in whatever mundane activities but that is just... not interesting to me. Moreover, that is something that these characters can do while in the background. The Scions' arcs are, for the most part, done. I don't necessarily think they should be killed off or anything, but I would really rather see them step into the background and give some room to a new cast with fresh perspectives.

Keep the Scions, whatever. But PLEASE for the love of god. Stop using them as instant solutions for everything. This is why I hate Sharlayan too. "Oh we need something, let's go adventure and find it out and ask the locals-... Oh nevermind, Sharlayan knows it and built a device. Oh nevermind Y'shtola already figured it out. Oh nevermind Alphinaud already knows and is ordering us to go somewhere." At least give us more people to bounce off on and figure stuff out. If G'raha gives even ONE speech about wanting to go on an adventure with me with the Shadowbringers soundtrack on the backround I will hurl.
The top reason why most of the Scions are in the story is rather simple. They sell merch. Until we get more recognizable poster cast-members, they aren't going anywhere and they will force them into the narrative.

At they very least I'd like them to introduce a few people other we can call if the scions are busy or something
I mean how's Y'shtola ever going to figure croos world travle if the wol comes in witha new problem every 5 minutes
I don't mind the Scions being referenced or showing up for a "call to arms" moment when the stakes are high but, for the most part, I just want a new cast with new, interesting dynamics and internal conflict.
The Scions have all had their character arcs completed in Shadowbringers and Endwalker, as far as I'm concerned.
IMO, they're there because of the trust system. They have to exist in perpetuity now or until they decide that the trust system can do a Galuf->Krile like in FF5 (basically Krile inherits Galuf's character level and job progress.) Realistically though, the twins need to be written out, either through a time skip or being put on a bus (metaphorically, they say they're going on their own adventure without you.) Urianger's story is mostly "done" but he still needs to be present to be the "commander data" of the group when Y'shola and Krile aren't present (eg side stories.)
What even are Thancred and Urianger's motivations nowadays? Thancred has long since completed his arc in 5.0, in Shadowbringers. Urianger loafed about with the Lopporits and got much needed closure at the tail-end of 6.0 with the touching reunion, and completed his arc too. Y'shtola is unlikely to ever be written out since Y'shtola represents FF14 in other media.
Thancred likewise is unlikely to be written out since it's HIS storyline that is the critical path we've been following since 1.0, effectively. If he wasn't in the 1.0 opening cutscene, the rest of 14 wouldn't be happening. No Minfilia, no F'lhaminn, no path of the 12, no Louisoix, No Scions. Likewise if Thancred didn't exist, the 2.0 story couldn't exist either. I'm sure from a writing/dev POV yes, they could have written out Thancred with the end of 2.0 MSQ, but they didn't.
That doesn't mean Y'shtola and Thancred can't be put on a bus for an expansion again like in HW. How I would write out all the scions for an expansion is to pull the "earth is groaning in pain" from FF6 where they are all on the same large airship when it breaks apart, you are pushed out first, and then you just see an explosion and pass out. Some time passes (for the sake of game logic, the same amount of time between 1.0 and 2.0) and everyone thinks you've been dead for 5 years. Again. Maybe not the best idea, but a time skip for YOU is the easiest way to write out the existing cast.
