Gil is handy for times when you want to throw gil at a problem instead of time. Let's say you really wanted the Hand of Creation title. Instead of farming all of the materials in Diadem, throw your gil at the MB to get what you need. If your crafters are already at the point where they can make the next tier of gear (6.4), you won't be spending gil to get gear anymore. You'll be making gil. Craft two sets of gear and sell one. You'll break even or make a profit. You'll need to keep some gil on hand for melds in the future (takes money to make money).

Honestly, if how much gil you need is probably tied to how much you care about glamour, housing, etc. You don't need that much gil to play the game. It is the "extra stuff" that drains your coffers.

There is no point having lots of Gil if can't use it to buy a larger house plot.

Still kinda new to the game. I have leveled all the crafting and gathering jobs to max level and purchaed gear. I have not leveled a combat class to max level yet. How much Gil do I really need at this point? There doesnt seem to be much to spend it on if you arent going to be in a free company? I have about 48 million. I have been playing the market full time instead of playing the game. Thanks for the advice.

The real answer depends on what you do ingame.

Do you raid savage and play the game (Don't say yes here, the hyper casuals will abuse you and tell you to go play other games).
If so, you need about 5m every 9 months to cover the costs of a raid tier.

Housing? The base cost of a house (3m, 20m, 50m) and then furniture can mostly be self crafted or bought for less than ~15m for a large unless you want specific expensive items that can double that easily.

Outside of that, Gil is a pointless currency. Just spend it, you make it back fast enough so never worry about it.
The people that disagree are just lazy and don't play the game. You are already in top 20-30% of players Gil wise if you are almost at 50m, the average player can barely scrape together enough to keep playing.

Mao been using Gils to fund getting houses for FC mates and friends. So far Mao battings pretty high as all of thems (abouts half dozen or so) but one now has house of their owns. Gils ALWAYS useful to Mao.

I dunno why I imagined you as a squirrel and hiding gil in all sorts of places but forgetting where you put it.

I see myself chopping a tree down and millions of gil just pouring out from finding one of your stashes.
