Honestly FFXI is alot closer to the made up MMO's you see ppl playing in Anime. People could have different gearset builds for the same job to suit their preferred content or playstyle, the world wasn't littered with automatic markers showing every quest objective or little flags over every NPC that had a quest you can start. The world wasn't covered in fast travel points so you actually went out and saw the world when travelling to places. And the game had numerous reasons for players to actually interact with each other in game on a regular basis. It definitely felt more lively than FFXIV once you got past the initial rush in a specific area when new content was added.

TBH after watching the anime Bofuri I kind of hope the next FF MMO goes that route with player development as it appeared they literally crammed the MMO in that anime full of options and left the players to figure out what they wanted to do or essentially develop based on how they play the game... which is how the main character basically breaks the game because she doesn't think like a typical MMO player lol.
