Okay so, from looking at this Laptop from HP, the F1 through F12 keys are what you would call shortcut keys that you may have to hold down the Fn key to get the noted function to work.

But the thing is, it is different for each model, by this I mean, it is either turned on or off depending on the model.

The good news is you can swap this feature on or off, but it requires using the BIOS screen, which I'll show you what that is in a moment, but the basic issue here is, that to get normal function of the F1 key to work in a game or application, it seems you need to Hold* down the Fn* key and press F1 while Fn is held down, this is annoying and why it's like this by default has everyone in a bind.

So to put the function of the F1 key back to a normal keyboard mode, you will have to do this: (I copy and Paste from the official HP site which I will link here as well)

Enable or disable fn (function) or action keys mode
Change the action key setting from the BIOS Setup Utility.

Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

Press the right or left arrow key to select the System Configuration menu.

Press the up or down arrow key to select Action Keys Mode.

Press the enter key to display the Enabled / Disabled options.

Press the up or down arrow key to select one of the options.

Enabled: Does not require pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f8 lowers the sound as printed on the key. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f8 keys minimizes and maximizes a web browser.

Disabled: Requires pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

For example, pressing f1 opens a help window. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f1 keys puts the computer in Sleep mode as printed on the key.

Press the f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.

This is for general HP family laptops, for the Envy it should be the same but maybe slightly different.

Hopefully it doesn't seem to complicated, just follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.

I was hoping somebody had the patience to put down the details on this.
One of the reasons that I really hate doing repairs or fixes on laptops.
Every one of them is a uniquely horrific piece of ... bad.
